< Previous[ COACHES AND SUPPORT STAFF ] 2018/19 VILLANOVA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 8 WWW.VILLANOVA.COM Joe Mullaney returns to the Wildcats for his 23rd season in 2018-19. As the team’s Associate Head Coach, he is involved with all aspects of on-court coaching and pre-game scouting of opponents. He came to the Main Line in 1996 and was elevated to his current position in 1998-99. Prior to beginning his tenure with the Wildcats, Mullaney was the head women’s bas- ketball coach at St. John’s University for 12 seasons. He compiled a 168-173 mark during his tenure and led his team to the 1988 Big East Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Mullaney was also the head coach at Providence College from 1980-83 and registered a 66-27 mark with the Friars. Throughout his career as a head coach, Mullaney recorded three sea- sons with at least 20 victories. He was named the 1990-91 Big East Conference Coach of the Year. Mullaney’s coaching career got its start in 1978-79 when he served as the head boys basketball coach at Warwick Veterans Memorial High School in his hometown of Warwick, R.I. Following his one year stint at the high school level, Mullaney became the assistant men’s coach at Rhode Island College from 1979 80, before taking over the reigns of the Providence women’s program. He is a 1978 graduate of Providence College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. During his play- ing days, Mullaney participated in two NCAA Tournaments and the NIT semifinals once. Mullaney and his wife Kathy reside in Downingtown, Pa. and are the parents of four children: Meghan (38), Amie Beth (36), Patrick Joseph (31) and Sean Connor (27). Meghan graduated from Villanova in 2002, Amie earned her Wildcat degree in 2005, Patrick earned his degree from Villanova in 2009 and Sean graduated from Villanova in 2014. In her role, Kurz will assist with on-court duties, handle film breakdown and film analysis and serve as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Kurz transferred to Villanova from Duke University and was a member of the Wildcat program from 2006-09. During her two seasons in a Villanova uniform she scored 1,064 points in 66 career games for an average of 16.1 points per contest and shot .471 from the field (403-of-855) and .357 from three-point range (100-of-280). She is only the second player in program history to score 1,000 points in two seasons. She also tallied 449 rebounds, 84 assists and 73 blocks. Kurz led the Wildcats to the 2009 NCAA Tournament by averaging a team-best 17.4 points per game and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per contest. For her efforts in 2008-09, she was a first team All-Big East honoree, in addition to being named the Big East Conference Most Improved Player and the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Year. She was also a Honorable Mention All- American and a Naismith Player of the Year nominee. After graduating from Villanova, Kurz played one season of pro- fessional basketball for the Das Ano Liosia Basketball Club in Ano Liosia, Greece. She began her coaching career as an assistant at Lehigh University from 2012-2014. Following her two-year stint at Lehigh, Kurz worked one year as a Development Associate at Penn Charter High School in Philadelphia. Kurz is a 2009 graduate of Villanova where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Communications. She also has a Masters of Science degree in Sports Business from New York University. She is single and resides in St. David’s, Pa. Shanette Lee enters her 20th year as an assistant coach for the Wildcats in 2018-19. Besides her on-court coaching, she will serve as the program’s video coordinator. Lee also spends her time speaking at different events in the Villanova area and is very instrumental in Villanova’s summer basketball camps. Lee is very familiar with Villanova basket- ball, as she was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Harry Perretta and the Wildcats from 1995-99. In her senior season in 1998-99, Lee became the all-time assist leader in the history of the program, finishing her career with 526. She also rates 22nd all-time on the Villanova rebounding list with 469. As a freshman in 1995-96, she was named Philadelphia Big Five Rookie of the Year. Lee and her 21-year-old daughter, Shanea reside in Bryn Mawr, Pa.. In this role, she will help assist head coach Harry Perretta and the Wildcat program in a number of areas including travel, student- athlete academic progress and community service, in addition to being the team’s liaison to the rest of the University and all outside agencies. Riley will also assist with the program’s summer camps. Riley played at Villanova from 1997-2002 and tallied 862 points, 416 assists, 356 rebounds and 81 steals. The 416 assists currently ranks seventh all-time in school history. During her Wildcat career, Villanova posted a 92-59 record and earned two NCAA Tournament berths. As a senior in 2001-02, Riley garnered Big East Conference Honorable Mention accolades, in addition to earning the Big East Sportsmanship Award. She was also a first team All-Philadelphia Big Five honoree in 2001-02. She has had previous collegiate coaching experience at both Georgetown University (2002-03) and LaSalle University (2003-10). From 2010-13, she was an assistant at her alma mater, Archbishop Carroll High School. In 2012, she helped the Patriots to both the Catholic League championship and the PIAA state title. Riley and her husband JC reside in Drexel Hill, Pa., with their seven- year old daughter Haley and four-year old son, William. Shawn Keane is in her third season as the women’s basketball athletic trainer and her ninth year overall at Villanova. In addition to serving as the trainer for head coach Harry Perretta and the Wildcats, Keane also serves as the athletic trainer for the Wildcat cheerleading squad. Keane was employed by NovaCare Rehabilitation for five years, where she worked with the Villanova cross country/track and field teams. In 2015, she began full-time employment with the university and worked with the wom- en’s soccer team and the men’s women’s tennis programs. Her duties include providing athletic training coverage at games and matches, coordinating orthopedic sick call with the team physicians as well as various administrative duties in the Athletic Training Room. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008 and went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology from The George Washington University in 2010. While completing her education, she was a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Colonial softball team for two years. Keane has been a NATA-BOC Certified Athletic Trainer since 2008 and is licensed by the state of Pennsylvania. She currently resides in Chalfont, Pa. Mary Anne Gabuzda is in her 12th season as the women’s basketball secretary after being a key figure for the men’s basketball team 26 years. Gabuzda joined the men’s basketball office in 1980. In her role with women’s basket- ball, she will oversee many of the internal administrative details of the basketball office. Gabuzda joined the men’s basketball office in 1980 and was a member of the office staff for the 1985 National Championship team and 16 NCAA Tournament squads. During her time with the men’s basketball program, she worked for three Wildcat head coaches including Rollie Massimino, Steve Lappas and Jay Wright. In January, 2017, Gabuzda was the recipient of the Jake Nevin Special Recognition Award at the Villanova Varsity Club Hall of Fame ceremony. She is a native of Glenolden, Pa., and a graduate of Cardinal O’Hara High School. Before being promoted to an Associate Athletic Director, Kenefick was the Assistant Athletic Director of Communications from 2002-07. In his role, Kenefick oversees all aspects of Villanova’s Media Relations Department. He is also beginning his 23rd season as the contact for both the football and women’s basketball programs. In 2018, he will begin his 14th year as the sport administrator for the women’s lacrosse program and the ninth as the day-to-day administrator for football. Kenefick served three years as a member of the BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship Committee and three years as a member of the BIG EAST Golf Championship Committee. During his time as Football Media Relations Director, Kenefick has successfully organized three national Player of the Year campaigns. Kenefick helped wide receiver Brian Finneran earn the Walter Payton Award in 1997, running back Brian Westbrook in 2001 and quarterback John Robertson in 2014. Kenefick has had his work recognized on a national level on a number of occasions. His football meda guide was twice voted the top publication in the nation at the FCS level and his football game day program finished in the top three on two occasions. A 1994 graduate of Villanova with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and a minor in Geography, Kenefick earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Villanova in July 1999. He was named Director of Media Relations in the fall of 1998 after serving as the Assistant Director from 1995-98. Kenefick and his wife, Stacey, reside in Drexel Hill, Pa. with their 10-year old daughter Hailey and seven year old daughter Hannah. Jenn Brophy joined the Office of Academic Support for Athletics at Villanova University in 2008 and has served as Assistant Director and then Associate Director before being promoted to Director in 2016. In her role, Brophy leads and oversees all aspects of the Office of Academic Support for Athletics to provide supplemental academic support for all varsity student-athletes in a manner that address their unique academic needs. During her time at Villanova, she has been instrumental in increasing the services offered to student-athletes and continuing the tradition of academic excellence. Brophy is extremely involved at Villanova and participates on several university committees including the University Retention Committee, Athletic Advisory Committee, ADIT and Athletic Title IX. She attended the University of Michigan National Intergroup Dialogue Institute in 2012 on behalf of Villanova and is an instructor for the IGR courses offered through the Communication department. She is also an instructor for the Leadership Learning Communities and recently started to work with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to instruct their Professional Development courses. Professionally, she is a member of the National Association for Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A), National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and she is actively involved with the NCAA and Big East Conference. A 2004 graduate of Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology, Brophy went on to earn her Master of Education Degree in Sport and Recreation Administration from Temple University in 2007. While at Temple, she interned at Saint Joseph’s University with the Office of Academic Support for Student-Athletes. She also completed an internship with the United States Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs where she worked with Athlete Services and the Operations Department. After graduating from Temple, Brophy worked as the Academic Coordinator for the Office of Academic Affairs for Varsity Athletics at Loyola College in Maryland before coming to Villanova. Brophy and her husband, Kyle, reside in Broomall, Pa., with their two- year old daughter Kylee and six-month old son Colin.
