< PreviousMike Nardi, a four-year starter at guard for the Wildcats from 2003-07, was elevated to the posi- tion of Assistant Coach in the spring of 2018 follow- ing the departure of Ashley Howard to accept the head coaching position at La Salle University. Since joining the basket- ball staff at the start of the 2015-16 season, Nardi has been a part of two NCAA national championships. Previously, the New Jersey native served as Director of Student-Athlete Development (2015-16), Video Coordinator (2016-17). and Director of Basketball Operations (2017-18). “It’s great to have a player of Mike’s caliber working his way up on our staff,” said Villanova head coach Jay Wright. “He is a talented coach with a bright future in our business.” Nardi originally came to Villanova after an outstanding career at St. Patrick’s High School in New Jersey. The 6-2 native of Linden, N.J., was tabbed New Jersey High School Player of the Year by the Newark Star Ledger. As a Wildcat, Nardi was named to the 2004 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team after starting all 35 games as a freshman. He would remain an integral part of some of Villanova’s most successful teams in the mid-2000’s, helping VU reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2005 and the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight in 2006. As a senior he helped mentor freshman Scottie Reynolds while helping lead the Wildcats back to the NCAA Tournament and he was named Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST. Nardi scored 1,306 points in his Villanova career. His 423 career assists place him in 12th place in school his- tory. He was a 2019 inductee into the Philadelphia Big Five Hall of Fame. Following graduation in 2007 Nardi played profes- sionally for nine seasons in Italy. He assumed the role of Director of Basketball Operations at Villanova. “We are excited to welcome Dwayne and his wife Lindsay home to Villanova,” stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. “As a player, Dwayne’s leadership traits played a critical role on our 2009 NCAA Final Four team. Those same traits have helped make him an outstanding young coach. He will be a great role model for our players.” A Silver Spring, Md., native, Anderson first came to Villanova by way of St. Thomas More (Conn.) in 2005. As a freshman, he was part of an NCAA Tournament Elite Eight team. In 2007-08, the 6-6 guard/forward earned a starting role for a unit that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. One year later, he helped lead the Wildcats to a 78-76 victory over Pittsburgh in the NCAA East Regional Final and the school’s first Final Four appearance in 24 years. He averaged 9.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as a senior captain in ‘08-09. In his four seasons, Anderson played on teams that posted a 102-37 overall record (.734) that included a 9-4 mark in the NCAA Tournament (.692). At the time of its departure, the class of 2009 (Anderson, Shane Clark, Dante Cunningham and Frank Tchuisi) was the win- ningest in program history. Following a professional career in Germany, Anderson entered the coaching profession, joining the staff of former VU Associate Head Coach Patrick Chambers. He spent five seasons in State College as an assistant coach, highlighted by the team’s 2018 run to the National Invitation Tournament title. Anderson is married to the former Lindsay Davis, who excelled as a four year member of the VU Swimming and Diving team from 2005-09, specializing in the 1 and 3 meter diving events. In this capacity she assists Coach Wright with an assortment of tasks, including oversight of day-to-day operations of Villanova Basketball, academic support, event planning and management and ticketing. Previously Davidson had served as Special Assistant to the Head Coach. Davidson came to Villanova in 2009 with a strong academic background. From 2001-09, she was a Mathematics teacher at Bloomfield Vocational Technical Schools in New Jersey. She also served as the center director and teaching specialist at the U.S. Dream Academy in East Orange, N.J. Davidson earned a mathematics degree from Florida State University, where she also played on the basket- ball team. She was a Dean’s List student as an under- graduate. She makes her home in Eagleville, Pa. REV. ROB HAGAN, O.S.A. TEAM CHAPLAIN / SENIOR ASSOCIATE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR In his 16th season at Villanova, Rev. Rob Hagan, O.S.A. serves as the Team Chaplain for the Men’s Basketball and Football teams at Villanova. In July 2018, he was elevated to the post of Senior Associate Athletics Director. As part of his role in the Athletic Department, he oversees the areas of Sports Medicine and Strength and Conditioning, and is also the administrator for the golf and ten- nis programs. Father Rob came to Villanova in 2003 as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, and has been part of the school’s athletics administrative team ever since. Hagan graduated from Villanova with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987. He went on to earn a J.D. from Widener University School of Law in 1990. After receiv- ing his law degree, Father Rob spent seven years as an attorney with Gillin and Associates, where he served as Criminal Defense Counsel, in addition to handling contract negotiations, arbitrations and mediations. He also served as assistant counsel to the Solicitor for the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority and the Delaware County Register of Wills. Hagan entered the Order of Saint Augustine in 1997. He served as Chaplain as Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and at the University of Maryland, College Park, and received a Masters in Theology from the Washington Theological Union in 2003. He is a past member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Delaware County Bar Association and the Delaware County Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. MALCOLM GRACE ASSISTANT ATHLETICS DIRECTOR/ COMPLIANCE In July of 2017 Villanova Director of Athletics Mark Jackson announced that Malcolm Grace has been hired as Villanova’s Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance/Basketball. In this position, Malcolm over- sees the compliance operations for the sports of Men’s & Women’s Basketball and assists the Athletics Compliance Office in administer- ing additional aspects of the com- pliance program. “We are excited to have Malcolm join our team,” said Jackson. “This is a unique position in college athletics in that it will be basketball specific. In this new role, Malcolm will not only help protect our basketball pro- grams, but will also look for new and innovative ways to work closely with both the Big East Conference and the NCAA.” He arrives at Villanova from Rutgers University where he was the Director of Compliance for two years. In this role, he managed NCAA, Big Ten Conference and University rules compliance for coaches, staff, student- athletes and stakeholders for six varsity Scarlet Knight athletic teams including women’s basketball, women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, gymnastics, softball and men’s track & field. Malcolm began his career in compliance at the NCAA national office as a Post-Graduate Intern for Enforcement from June, 2014 until April, 2015. During this internship, he investigated and processed Level I, II and III infractions of NCAA bylaws at Division I, II and III institutions. Before getting involved in college athletics, Malcolm worked for 15 years as a lawyer, congressional counsel and lobbyist in Washington, D.C. His last seven years in D.C., were as Vice-President & General Counsel at a prominent lobbyist firm. Malcolm earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Syracuse University in May, 1994. In addition to being a Dean’s List student, Malcolm was a four year member of the men’s soccer team and served as a team captain as a senior in 1993. He went on to earn a Law Degree from Syracuse in 1997.2019-20 VILLANOVA MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF 2019 -20 MEDIA GUIDE 31 SUPPORT STAFF JEFF PIERCE HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER The staff member with the longest continuous stretch of service to the Villanova Basketball program is head athletic trainer Jeff Pierce. The 2019-20 campaign marks Pierce’s 31st season with the basketball team. Pierce holds bachelor of science and masters degrees from West Chester University and was awarded a masters degree in public administration from Villanova in 2005. Pierce serves as the athletic department’s sports medicine program’s point person with the men’s basketball program. Along with team physician Dr. Michael Duncan and team orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Emper, Pierce helps oversee the daily rehabilitation efforts of those athletes in the program coping with injury. Pierce and his wife Rhonda make their home in Phoenixville, Pa. They have two daughters, Kelly and Lindsey. DR. MICHAEL DUNCAN TEAM PHYSICIAN Former Villanova baseball player Dr. Michael Duncan, M.D., joined the University in 2012 and serves as the team physician for the Villanova athletic department. Dr. Duncan graduated Summa Cum Laude from Villanova, where he majored in biology and minored in business while also playing baseball for the Wildcats. After earning his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, he completed his residency at the Bryn Mawr Family Practice Residency Program at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Duncan completed his primary care sports medicine fellowship through the Drexel University Sports Medicine fellowship program associated with Hahnemann University Hospital. While at Drexel, he served as an assistant team physician for two Division I universities, one Division II university and two Philadelphia based high schools. Dr. Duncan is an active member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians and Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians. JOHN SHACKLETON STRENGTH COACH John Shackleton joined the basketball program in August 2012 and has played a pivotal role as the Wildcats’ Strength Coach since that point. He also plays a key role in developing the team’s nutritional plan. Shackleton first came to Villanova in 2010 when he served as an assistant strength coach for the Wildcats football program. In that role he assisted the head strength coach in all aspects of the physical preparation as the 2009 NCAA FCS champion Wildcats prepared for a 2010 season that would see them advance to the FCS semifinals. Following his stint on the Main Line, Shackleton served one year as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Pittsburgh. He worked primarily with the track and field and swimming programs. In 2011, Shackleton was named assistant strength and conditioning coach at Princeton University where he worked with the men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s heavy weight crew and women’s water polo units as well as the Tiger men’s basketball and football programs. Shackleton earned a BS Magna Cum Laude Kinesiology degree from Temple University in 2008 and an MS Exercise Science diploma in 2010 from George Washington University. He makes his home in Newtown, Pa., with his wife Beth and their son John, born in 2013. DR. WILLIAM EMPER TEAM ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON Returning to work with the Villanova Basketball program in 2019-20 is Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. William Emper. A Harvard University graduate, Emper completed his medical studies at Harvard and was also an All-Ivy League defensive back for the Crimson football squad. He is associated with Bryn Mawr Hospital as an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist.JENN BROPHY DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR ATHLETICS Jenn Brophy is the Director of Academic Support at Villanova. Brophy served as the Assistant Director for Academic Support for three years and then served as Associate Director under the late Dan Regan. She presently oversees the daily operations of the Office of Academic Support for Athletics. As the primary lia- son between the academic and athletic communities, Brophy is in constant communication with deans, faculty and coaches. She graduated from Lebanon Valley College in 2004 where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She pursued a graduate degree at Temple University and is currently working towards another master’s degree in counseling from Villanova. After graduating from Temple, Brophy worked as the academic coor- dinator for the Office of Academic Affairs for Varsity Athletics at Loyola College in Maryland. An active member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A), she is a member of the Learning Concerns Committee. Brophy and her husband Kyle reside in Ardmore, Pa. MARISSA PAFFAS ATHLETIC ACADEMIC ADVISOR Marissa Paffas joined the Villanova Basketball family in the fall of 2012. She serves as an Athletic Advisor, working closely with the men’s basket- ball student-athletes. Paffas and Jenn Brophy were recipients of the 2018 Nova Nation Award for exceptional service to the men’s basketball program. Paffas graduated from Villanova in 2007 with a B.A. in history with a concentration in Russian Area Studies and a minor in Russian language. She went on to earn a Master’s degree from Villanova in 2009. From 2008-12, Paffas served as a tutor to Villanova student-athletes. In addition, she worked for the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum from 2009-12. HELENE MERCANTI ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TO COACH WRIGHT Helene Mercanti joined the men’s basketball staff in May of 2011 as the administrative assistant to Head Coach Jay Wright. In this post, Mercanti coordi- nates the coach’s non-basket- ball schedule, including speak- ing engagements and other events. Mercanti came to Villanova University in 1999 and previous- ly served in the Procurement Office before moving on to the men’s basketball staff that is headquartered in the Davis Center. Mercanti and her husband Jack make their home in Holmes, Pa. In this capacity Fraschiila oversees video responsibilities for the coaching staff. He also serves as a producer for the Talking Villanova Basketball Podcast with Jay Wright pre- sented by Hartford Funds. Fraschilla played four seasons of basketball at Harvard University from 2013-17. During his playing career with the Crimson, Fraschilla appeared in 24 games. A native of Dallas, Tex., Fraschilla attended Highland Park High School. His father, Fran Fraschilla is the for- mer head basketball coach at Manhattan, St. John’s and New Mexico who is now an ESPN College Basketball analyst. His mother is Meg Fraschilla and he has one sibling, James (26). MIKE SHERIDAN ASST. ATHLETICS DIRECTOR/COMMUNICATIONS Mike Sheridan serves as the basketball program’s primary conduit to the print and broad- cast media. Sheridan joined the athletic department in October 1998 and became the contact for men’s basketball. He has held that role ever since and in the summer of 2018 was promoted to the role of Assistant Athletics Director/Communications. As part of his responsibilities, Sheridan serves as a coordi- nating producer of “Inside Villanova Basketball with Jay Wright” and co-host of the “Talking Villanova Basketball with Jay Wright” podcast. In 2019 Sheridan received the Katha Quinn Award from the United States Basketball Writers Association for contributions to college basketball. Sheridan is the co-author with Jay Wright and Mark Dagostino of the New York Times bestseller, “Attitude: How to Develop a Winning Mindset On and Off the Court.” Prior to his arrival at Villanova, Sheridan spent 14 years as the managing editor of Basketball Times and a decade as editor of Eastern Basketball magazine. The 1984 graduate of Fordham University earned two “Best Writing” awards from the United States Basketball Writers Association. Sheridan and his wife Kristin live in Havertown, Pa. BLAKE BURKEY ASSISTANT AD / EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS Blake Burkey enters his second year at Villanova in 2019-20 and will serve as the Assistant Athletics Director for Equipment Operations. In this role, Burkey will oversee the equipment and apparel needs for all 24 Wildcat sports. He arrives at Villanova from Saint Joseph’s University where he was the Director of Athletic Equipment Operations and the Head Equipment Manager from 2015-18. Prior to Saint Joseph’s he was the Assistant Director of Facilities & Operations and the Head Equipment Manager at Rider from 2010-15. His first full-time position came at the University of Pennsylvania where he was an assistant for Athletic Facilities and Operations from 2008-10. Burkey, a 2006 graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s University, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics in 2006. He also owns a Masters Degree in Sports Administration from Canisius College in 2008.ROB DEPERSIA GRADUATE MANAGER Rob DePersia, a native of Cherry Hill N.J. joined the Wildcats staff in the summer of 2019 as a graduate manager. This product of Haddonfield High School is a 2019 graduate of Rowan University, where he earned a degree in Biomedical Engineering. He was a four- year starter and three-year captain on the Men’s Basketball team. In his four seasons at Rowan, the guard became the first player in program history to record 1,000 or more points and 500 or more assists. Depersia is currently pursuing a Masters of Business in the Villanova School of Business. JOE FLANNERY GRADUATE MANAGER Joe Flannery came to Villanova in June 2018 as a graduate manager after one season as a professional basketball player in Spain. Flannery played at Babson College, where he was part of a 2017 Division III NCAA championship unit. A two-time NABC Division III National Player of the Year, Flannery scored 2,620 points and collected 779 rebounds as a four year starter. In addition, he served as a team captain in his final two seasons. In 2017 he was a finalist for the Clarence “Bevo” Francis award, given to the top small college player in the country. Flannery is a native of Action, Mass. His parents are Suzanne and Joe Flannery and he has two sisters, Allie and Sarah. TOM LEIBIG GRADUATE MANAGER Tom Leibig, Villanova Class of 2018, returned to his alma mater in the summer of 2019 as a graduate manager. A native of Havertown, Pa., Leibig played two seasons at Villanova (2016- 18) after serving as a practice player. Leibig was a part of the Wildcats’ 2018 NCAA national championship unit. Leibig is pursuing a Masters degree at Villanova. TYSON WEST GRADUATE MANAGER Tyson West is in his first season as a graduate manager for the Wildcats in 2019-20. West’s father, Doug, was a standout Wildcats’ guard from 1985-89 and later served as an assistant coach at Villanova, where he was part of the staff that helped lead the ‘Cats to the 2009 NCAA Final Four. Tyson West is a graduate The Linsly School in Wheeling, W.Va. He earned a degree in Psychology from Penn State Altoona, where he played three seasons of basketball. West is currently pursuing a Masters degree in higher education. CHRISTOPHER M. DINCUFF AWARD This award honors the memory of Chris Dincuff, Villanova class of 1992. Chris was killed on Sept. 11, 2001, while working in the North Tower of the World Trade Center as a commodities broker for Carr Futures. One month earlier Chris had, at his own expense, traveled to follow the Wildcats on a summer tour of Italy. He was an avid fan of Villanova Basketball and his fiancee, Angie Gutermuth established a scholarship in his name to provide educational aid for a student manager in honor of Chris. Each year this award is presented to a Villanova basketball manager, one of the program’s unsung heroes, who exudes the same passion for the program that Chris Dincuff demonstrated. The 2019 recipient is Jim Murray. TERESA AND JOSEPH MARTINI ‘61 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF RANDY FOYE This scholarship was created in 2006 after the graduation of All-American guard Randy Foye. It helps provide educational and financial support to a student manager from New Jersey, where Foye grew up in Newark. The award honors Foye, who overcame the loss of both his parents before the age of six to emerge as BIG EAST Player of the Year as a college senior. Foye continues to serve the community of Newark today through the Randy Foye Foundation. Chris Montie is the 2019-20 recipient of the Teresa and Joseph J.
