In 2018, El-Zare led Southern Miss to its best season in pro- gram history. The Golden Eagles finished the 2018 season with a program-record 13 wins and 11 shutouts. In addition, Southern Miss advanced to the C-USA Women’s Soccer Tournament for the first time since 2007, captured its first semi- final victory in the C-USA Tournament, made its first appearance in the C-USA Tournament Championship Match, and finished the sea- son as the C-USA Tournament Runner-up. The Golden Eagles ended the 2018 regu- lar season with five conference wins, mark- ing the most C-USA wins by any Southern Miss team since the 2000 season. El-Zare had the privilege of coaching Kendell Mindnich during her record-break- ing season in 2018. To cap off her highly decorated career, Akinniyi was awarded the C-USA Spirit of Service Award for the Fall of 2018 and was selected as a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year program in August of 2019. In 2016, El- Zare lead the Golden Eagles to its first winning-season since 2003. El-Zare’s team finished 8-7-2 and won six of its 10 home games. The Golden Eagles scored 26 goals and only allowed 18 against. In addi- tion to the team’s winning record, Brittany Taylor added her name to the Southern Miss record book. Taylor ranks is the top 10 in saves, average goals against, and shutouts. Taylor holds the individual single-season saves record (128). Along with Taylor’s accolades during her senior season, Beth Coleman received C-USA Defensive Player of the Week in the first week of competition. El-Zare also placed four play- ers on postseason All C-USA teams. Becky McMullan and Katie Richmond were named to the C-USA All-Conference Third Team and Lyndsey Lee and Brittany Taylor were named to the C-USA All-Academic First Team. The first year of the El-Zare Era of Southern Miss soccer was highlighted by team and individual success. The Golden Eagles set new records and produced other perfor- mances that ranked among the best in pro- gram history en route to one of the better seasons in a decade. Southern Miss finished the 2013 season with a 7-9-4 record. All told, the 2013 Golden Eagles either set a record or cracked the top 10 in 18 team categories. The 2013 squad set new marks in saves (138), save percentage (.807), saves per game (6.9), total shots (323), total minutes played (21,092) and goalie minutes played (1,913). Two Golden Eagles, Danica Roberts and Brittany Taylor, were tabbed C-USA All- Conference selections. Roberts, a senior forward, earned Third Team honors while Taylor, a freshman keeper, was named to the All-Freshman squad. It was the first time a Golden Eagle was recognized on a C-US All-Conference team since 2011. Roberts finished 2013 as an offensive star, not just for the team but among conference and national strikers. Her 13 goals still rank as the second most in a season in program history. Roberts led Conference USA in points and goals for the season. Taylor set new single-season marks in a number of goalie-specific categories -- 128 saves broke the record of 107 set by Hannah Vanderboegh in 2011 while an average of 7.1 saves per game bested the single-season mark of 6.69 set by Leslie Schoeplein in 2002. Roberts and Taylor weren’t the only Golden Eagles to make their mark during the 2013 season. Casey Adkins, was named to the C-USA All-Academic First Team, and tied the mark for most starts in a season (20). Senior Chelsea Cruthirds registered the pro- gram’s 14th all-time hat trick. In year two, El-Zare continued to build. Despite a 5-11-3 overall record, he con- tinued to see improvement in the Golden Eagles. Casey Adkins was named to the C-USA All-Conference Third Team. Adkins and Brittany Taylor both earned a spot on the C-USA All-Academic First Team. As a team, the 2014 squad was rec- ognized for its work in the classroom as the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) announced the Golden Eagles as one of its annual Team Academic Award winners. In addition, soccer saw 22 stu- dent-athletes tally a 3.0 grade point average or higher to be named on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The 22 student-athletes recognized was the second most for Southern Miss on the year behind football (27) and the most among female sports. Seven of the student-athletes record- ed a GPA of 3.75 or better to earn C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medals. Prior to Southern Miss, El-Zare came to Hattiesburg after a long and distinguished career in the soccer coaching profession, having led the Mobile Soccer Club as its Director of Coaching since 2007. During that span, El-Zare also assisted on the coaching staffs at the University of Mobile on the men’s side and the women’s side at the University of South Alabama (2002-11). In 2011 with Mobile, El-Zare helped lead the team to the 2011 Southern States Athletic Conference Championship while coaching six SSAC All- Conference members and five NAIA All- Americans. While at South Alabama, the squad advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in seven consecutive seasons and finished as the 2005 runner up. Prior to his move to Alabama, El-Zare was an assistant on the women’s side for two years at FIU. While in Miami, he was also the Director of Coach and Player Development for the Cape Coral Soccer Club (1999-02). Additional collegiate coaching experi- ence for El-Zare included a four-year run at Saint Thomas University where he served as the assistant men and women’s coach during the 1995 season before taking over the women’s program from 1996-98. El-Zare’s club experience includes time working with the Olympic Development Program of the Alabama Youth Soccer Association since 2002 and the Florida vari- ant of the program prior to that. Professionally, El-Zare was a coach for the Women’s United Soccer Association and spent time as a player with the Florida Stars of the USISL out of Miami and the Al-Kuroom Vineyard F.C. in Alexandria, Egypt. El-Zare earned his degree in athletic training and physical education from Lincoln Memorial University in 1992 while also performing as a scholarship student-athlete. Soileau arrived as Southern Miss after two seasons at the University of Louisiana Monroe. Along with her two seasons with the Warhawks, Soileau holds six years of coaching and administrative experience at the Division I and II levels. In 2016, Soileau helped lead ULM to the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament for the first time in program his- tory. She also had the privilege of coaching 2016 First Team Sun Belt All-Conference goalkeeper Brooke-Lynn Scroggins during her record breaking season. Prior to ULM, Soileau served as the women’s soccer assistant coach at Converse College and was the head coach of the reserve squad. While at Converse, Soileau handled all administrative duties for two teams, which totaled 47 players including travel, equipment, social media, recruiting, and fundraising. Before her time at Converse, Soileau coached at Barbe High School and Calcasieu soccer club in Lake Charles, La. While at Barbe, the Lady Bucs consistently ranked in the top 20. Soileau has also spent her summers coaching for Texas A&M, Rice and McNeese State collegiate summer camps. Soileau holds multiple coaching diplo- mas and certificates including, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma and an USSF National License. She is currently working on her United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma. Among these accomplishments, Soileau was named to the 2017-18 United Soccer Coaches, 30 under 30 program, which includes 30 of the most promising soccer coaches in America from all levels of competition. This program recognizes up and coming coaches while enhancing their knowledge of soccer and developing coaching methods. Soileau played for FIU her freshman year and helped the Panthers become the 2009 Sun Belt regular season champions. She then moved to McNeese State where was award- ed All-Southland Conference Honorable Mention as a defender. Soileau record the most minutes for McNeese in 2012 where she primarily played as a defender and a back-up goalkeeper if needed. During off-seasons, Soileau played in the Women’s Soccer Professional League for Houston South Select and served as the team captain for the U23 Louisiana State Team at the USASA National Championships. Prior to her collegiate experience, Soileau played for Challenge Soccer Club in Houston, Texas and won multiple Texas State championships while also playing for the South Texas ODP team. Soileau earned her Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Performance and then her Master’s in Exercise Physiology, both with honors at McNeese. Soileau main- tained a 4.0 GPA while earning a Masters and working as a graduate assistant for the Athletic Director and Faculty Athletic Rep. In undergrad, she was the President of SAAC and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Soileau currently resides in Hattiesburg with her husband, Logan and their dog, JJ Beau. Coaching Staff 12 n 2019 Southern Miss Soccer | www.southernmiss.comwww.southernmiss.com | 2019 Southern Miss Soccer n 13 Coaching/Support Staff Abbey Barnum Assistant Coach | First Season Midwestern State, 2017 Barnum comes to Southern Miss after spending the 2018 season as an assis- tant coach at Rhodes College (Memphis, Tenn.). During her time at Rhodes College, Barnum helped the women’s soccer program to a 9-5-3 record, improving from the previous season. She also helped the Lynx to the Southern Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Final and a second place finish in the league for the 2018 season. Three athletes that Barnum coached at Rhodes College earned United Soccer Coaches All-South Atlantic Region honors while six earned All-SAA honors. Prior to joining the coaching staff at Rhodes College, Barnum served as an assis- tant coach for the University of the Southwest (Hobbs, N.M.) women’s soccer program. Barnum helped the program achieve a 13-3 record during the 2017 season, marking the second-best overall record in the program’s history and the best conference record in the program’s history. With Barnum’s coaching assistance, the Mustangs received regional rankings by the NAIA and outscored oppo- nents, 69-4. While coaching at University of the Southwest, Barnum also honed her recruiting skills as she signed seven stu- dent-athletes as a first-year college coach. The Spring, Texas native began her coaching career in 2016 when she served as a coach for the Liverpool Football Club International Academy America in Wichita Falls, Texas. The time that Barnum spent with the club developing youth players allowed her to create strong recruiting ties in the state of Texas which have proven to be a valuable asset over the course of her collegiate coach- ing career. Before breaking into the coaching indus- try, Barnum enjoyed a successful play- ing career at Midwestern State University (Wichita Falls, Texas) where she was a member of the Mustang’s 2013 and 2016 Women’s Soccer Lone Star Conference Championship teams. Barnum was successful in the classroom as well as she held an academic merit schol- arship over the course of her four years at Midwestern State University. Barnum also has a passion for serving others and her community as she filled the role of community service liaison for the University of the Southwest Athletic Department. In addition, Barnum has spent time serving as a volunteer with various organizations including, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Special Olympics, St. Jude Memphis Marathon and Girls Summit just to name a few. Barnum earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from Midwestern State University in 2017 and then went on to earn her Master’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Sport Management from University of the Southwest in 2018. Alex Richard Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach | Second Season Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 2016 Richard joined the Southern Miss strength and condi- tioning staff in the Fall of 2016. He currently serves as the strength and conditioning coach for the men’s basketball team and the women’s soccer team. Richard’s main job duties include, design- ing and implementing year-round training programs for each of his teams. Richard began his career at Southern Miss as a grad- uate assistant. He earned a master’s degree in exercise science from Southern Miss in 2018. Richard earned his bachelor’s degree in health promotion and wellness from Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2016, where he was a four-year letterwinner on the men’s basketball team. Richard was the leading scorer on the 2014-15 NCAA Division III national championship squad. During his time up north, the Spring Green, Wisc., native was an assistant strength coach at Neurological Training Systems from 2014-15, and also worked with the Wisconsin football team during the Summer of 2015. Julie Butler Assistant Athletic Trainer Second Season Southern Miss, 2018 Butler began work- ing at Southern Miss in the Fall of 2018 as a graduate assistant in the athletic training department. She was promoted to a full time assistant athletic trainer in January of 2019. The Wiggins, Miss. native serves as the athletic trainer for women’s soccer team and the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Butler is in charge of the sport coverage, rehabil- itation, evaluation of injuries, and referrals for each of her teams. She also serves as the Summer Athletic Training Student Camp Coordinator, and is the oversight of Physicians ATR visits. In addition, she serves as a preceptor for the Southern Miss athletic training program and assists the director with insurance billing processing. Butler graduated from Southern Miss in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in athlet- ic training.
