Bernard "Peck" Hickman 1944-1967 Denny Crum 1971-2001 Before Bernard "Peck" Hickman arrived, UofL had produced only one winning season in its previous nine. Hickman promptly turned the Cardinals' program around, guiding his initial UofL team in 1944 to a 16-3 record and starting a string of 46 consecutive winning seasons for the Cardinals. In 23 seasons at UofL (1944-67), Hick- man directed the Cardinals to a 443-183 overall record, a .708 winning percentage that ranks him among the top 45 NCAA Division I coaches of all time. He never had a team with a losing record, produced eleven 20-win seasons at UofL and averaged over 19 victories a season. He guided the Cardinals to five NCAA Tournament appearances and six NIT appearances. In only his fourth sea- son at UofL, Hickman’s Cardinals won the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament (NAIB) in 1948, the school’s first national championship. Eight years later, his 1956 team won the NIT championship. He directed UofL to its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 1959. Hickman took over the administrative responsibilities of serving as UofL’s Director of Athletics in 1954. He remained in the dual role of athletic director and head basketball coach until his retirement from coaching in 1967. His .708 winning percentage ranked seventh among active major college coaches when he retired to devote full time to his athletic director duties, a position he held until 1973. He died at the age of 88 on Feb. 20, 2000. One of the most impressive eras in collegiate bas- ketball came to an end following the 2000-01 season as former UofL Coach Denny Crum retired after 30 seasons with the Cardinals. The man admirably labeled “Cool Hand Luke” by former commentator Al McGuire was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on May 9, 1994. He directed Louisville to the 1980 and the 1986 NCAA Championships, ranking him as one of only 10 coaches in NCAA history to win two or more titles. Six times he guided the Cardinals into the NCAA Final Four, including four times in the decade of the ’80s. Only three coaches all-time coached more Final Four teams than Crum. He directed the Cardinals to 23 NCAA Tournament appearances. Three of his squads participated in the NIT, reaching the NIT semifinals in 1985. The Cardinals captured or shared 12 Metro Conference regular season titles and 11 post-season tournament championships under Crum’s guidance. Crum engineered UofL to 20 or more victories in 21 of his 30 seasons. Crum’s 675 victories rank him 15th all-time, holding a 675-295 career record. His NCAA Tournament mark is 42-23. He retired at the conclusion of the 2000- 01 season and continued to work as a special assistant to the UofL president for several years. The KFC Yum! Center court has been named in his honor. John Dromo 1967-71 John Dromo joined University of Louisville staff as an assistant coach in both football and basketball in 1948, begining the longest coaching tenure in UofL history. He remained an assistant football coach under Frank Camp until 1951, when he gave up football to become the Cardinals’ head golf coach. While an as- sistant for 17 years under Bernard “Peck” Hickman, UofL produced a 359-162 record, won the 1956 NIT Championship, played in five NCAA Tournaments and reached the 1959 NCAA Final Four. He succeeded Hickman as head coach in 1967, compiling a 68-23 record (.747 winning percentage) in nearly four seasons as UofL’s head basketball coach (1967-71). His first UofL team was 21-7, won the Missouri Valley Conference title and went to the NCAA Tournament. A heart attack during the 1970-71 season forced Dromo from continuing as the Cardinals’ basketball coach. He died on Sept. 29, 1992 at the age of 76. The first coach in NCAA history to take three different teams to the NCAA Final Four, Pitino was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. In 32 seasons as a collegiate head coach at five different schools, Pitino compiled a 647-268 record. He had a 293--140 record in 16 seasons at UofL, the third winningest coach in Cardinal history. Those figures do not include a record of 123-3 for games vacated by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, which reduced his on-court overall record of 770-271 and UofL record of 416-143. In Pitino’s 16 years at UofL, the Cardinals produced 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven Sweet 16s, three Final Fours, a national title and five Elite Eight appearances over the last nine years. However, four years of vacated records ncluding four NCAA Tournament appearances, four Sweet 16s, three Elite Eights, two Final Fours, and a national championship reduce those figures. A 2006 inductee to the New York City Hall of Fame, Pitino is one of a select group of 12 coaches who took teams from four different schools to the NCAA Tournament. He guided Kentucky to three NCAA Final Four appearances in eight seasons (1989-97), winning the 1996 NCAA Championship and reaching the national title game in 1997. He also served as head coach at Providence College (1985-87, 1987 Final Four), Boston University (1978-83), Hawaii (last six games in 1975-76) as well as the NBA New York Knicks (1987-89) and Boston Celtics (1997-2001). UofL began a new era when it named Chris Mack as its new head men’s basketball coach on March 28, 2018. In nine seasons as the head coach at Xavier, Mack guided the Musketeers to a 215-97 record and eight NCAA Tournament appearances (the last five straight years), including reaching the Sweet 16 on four occasions and the Elite Eight in 2017. His teams won or shared three conference regular season cham- pionships while compiling a 105-49 league record over nine seasons in the Big East and Atlantic 10. Among active coaches, Mack’s .687 winning percentage as a head coach ranks him 17th in the nation and his 259 victories are the 12th-most ever amassed by a coach in their first 11 seasons. His 2017-18 squad achieved a 29-6 record and earned the school’s first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In his first season at UofL, Mack guided the Cardinals to a 20-14 record and earned a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament while facing the nation’s fourth-toughest schedule. He followed that with a 24-7 record in 2019-20 and tied for second in the ACC, with the postseason cancelled due to COVID-19. Mack is the 21st head coach in Louisville’s 106-year history and the seventh in the past 75 years. David Padgett 2017-18 David Padgett was named interim head men’s bas- ketball coach at UofL on Sept. 29, 2017 and served in that capacity for the entire 2017-18 season. He guided the Cardinals to a 22-14 record in his lone year. His 22 coaching victories were the second-most for a first-year coach in Louisville history behind only Denny Crum’s 26-5 record initial season in 1971-72. Padgett joined Crum and John Dromo (21 wins in 1967-68) as the only UofL coaches to have won 20 games in their first season with the Cardinals. Padgett was just the third head coach for the Cardinals in a 47-year period. At the age of 33, he was the third-youngest head coach in NCAA Division I and the youngest among Power 5 schools. A three-year starter and captain at center for the Cardinals (2005-08), Padgett was a unanimous first-team All-Big East Conference selection as a senior. He par- ticipated in three NCAA Tournaments as a player, reaching the regional finals twice.
