< PreviousThe Kentucky men’s and women’s tennis programs are set to kick off their respec- tive 2019-20 seasons, starting with a full slate of tournaments in the fall. The women’s team will compete in nine competitions throughout the fall season, hosting the Kentucky Invite on Nov. 1-3 at Top Seed Tennis in Nicholasville, Kentucky. There is no cost of admission and fans are encouraged to attend. Power-five programs Penn State, Utah and Virginia Tech will join DePaul, Miami (Ohio) and the host Wildcats in the second annual tournament. The layout will feature a hidden-dual format, with the doubles contest beginning each morning at 9 a.m., followed by the singles rounds at 10 a.m. Last season, Kentucky players gathered a combined 30 wins in the three-day stretch, reporting only four losses – three in singles and one in doubles. The Cats will also sport an updated roster since hosting last season’s Kentucky Invite. Three newcomers have been added to the 2019-20 roster after losing three players from a season ago, including All-South- eastern Conference first-team recipient and then-senior Justina Mikulskyte. The program added three natives of Spain in Carla Gir- bau, Carlota Molina and Maialen Morante. Molina, of Gran Canaria, Spain, opened her collegiate campaign at Northwestern’s Wildcat Invite on Oct. 4-6, winning the main singles draw championship title. She won three straight singles matches en route to a perfect record to begin her collegiate career. Fall tournaments are designed to give collegiate players practice ahead of the regu- lar season and do not replicate a dual-match format where teams compete head-to-head. Scores are attached to the individual athlete for preseason and professional ranking pur- poses, but do not attach to regular-season records. After posting a 16-15 (5-7 SEC) record that included a 4-1 win over VCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last May, the Kentucky men’s team is set to compete in a fall 2019 slate featuring eight tourna- ments across seven states, while the spring 2020 agenda incorporates 17 home tilts and 10 road trips. In nonconference dual matches, Ken- tucky will open with a doubleheader ver- sus Cleveland State and Toledo on Jan. 16 at Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex. The Wildcats will head to South Bend, In- diana, for their first true road test at Notre Dame on Jan. 19 and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 24-25. Home matches with IUPUI and Day- ton (Jan. 28), Oklahoma (Feb. 2), Northern Kentucky and Northwestern (Feb. 7), as well as Memphis and Kennesaw State (Feb. 21), plus an away match at Duke (Feb. 9), will provide the final tune-ups before SEC play. In league competition, the Cats will get LSU (March 1), Arkansas (March 13), Van- derbilt (March 20), South Carolina (April 3), Ole Miss (April 10) and Mississippi State (April 12) at home and Texas A&M (Feb. 28), Alabama (March 6), Auburn (March 8), Georgia (March 27), Tennessee (March 29) and Florida (April 5) on the road. Noncon- ference matchups versus Niagara (March 15) and Illinois (March 23) will break up SEC play at home. Last season, Kentucky went 13-10 against opponents it will rematch in 2020. After opening the fall with the M15 Champaign in Illinois on Sept. 8-14, Ken- tucky sent individual players to the Fan- sworth-Ivy Plus in Princeton, New Jersey, on Sept. 20-22, the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sept. 20-23 and the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Oct. 7-13. Fall play is set to continue with the in-state Louisville Invitational on Oct. 11-12, the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Cham- pionships in Nashville, Tennessee, on Oct. 24-29 and the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Califor- nia, on Nov. 6-10. Released on Sept. 17, the 2019-20 Pre- season ITA Division I Men’s National Rank- ings landed three Cats among the most highly rated players in collegiate tennis. Kento Yamada debuted at No. 116 in the singles rankings and made an appearance alongside senior César Bourgois as the 32nd-ranked doubles team. Freshman Liam Draxl enters college as the No. 2 Freshman/ Newcomer in America.
