SERIES HISTORY n Georgia leads the series 60-56-8, winning 15 of the last 19 games. Auburn owns a winning record in Athens (18-15) while Georgia has a winning mark on the Plains (17-12-2). n The Bulldogs were 27-10 winners in the last game played in Athens (2018); Georgia was a 21-14 winner last season at Jordan Hare Stadium. n Auburn is 17-22-1 against ranked Georgia teams all-time, while the Bulldogs are 13-28-1 vs. the Tigers when they are ranked. n This is the earliest meeting during the season since the very first game between the schools in 1892 (played February 20) and will be only the sixth time the matchup has been played in October; the last was in 1936 (October 24). n The Auburn-Georgia series is tied for the second-most played current FBS series entering this season [Minne- sota-Wisconsin 129, Cincinnati-Miami, Ohio 124, North Carolina-Virginia 124]. The series is older than the Geor- gia-Georgia Tech (112 games) and the Auburn-Alabama series (84 games). n Auburn and Georgia first met in 1892 at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park; each first played its instate rival in 1893. n The two teams did not play in 1943, because Auburn did not field a team due to World War II, and did not play in 1917 and 1918 because of WWI and the subsequent influenza outbreak. With those exceptions, Auburn and Georgia have played continuously since 1898. KICKOFF COVERAGE n Auburn’s 2020 campaign will be its 128th season of college football. The Tigers have 777 wins all-time, 13th-most among FBS schools. n Preseason all-SEC Tigers as selected by the league’s coaches include first-team picks LB K.J. Britt and DE Big Kat Bryant, OL Brodarious Hamm on the second team and WR Seth Williams and DB/RS Christian Tutt as third team selections. n Quarterback Bo Nix has a current streak of 218 consecu- tive pass attempts thrown without an interception, second nationally behind Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence (276). n Team captains for the 2020 season are LB K.J. Britt, DE Big Kat Bryant, QB Bo Nix and RB Shaun Shivers. n Auburn has been ranked in the AP Top 10 at least once during the last eight seasons, tying a school-best streak from 1983-90. n Eight players made their first Auburn starts in the Kentucky win: WR Ze’Vian Capers, OG Brandon Council, OT Brodar- ious Hamm, OT Alec Jackson, OG Tashawn Manning, DB Zion Puckett, DB Jaylin Simpson, LB Colby Wooden. n The Tigers rank first in this week’s NCAA FBS statistics in red zone defensive percentage, allowing opponents to score on just 33.3% of their attempts. n At +3.0, Auburn is tied for third nationally in turnover margin with Kansas State; Virginia (4.0) and UCF (3.5) are the national leaders. n Redshirt freshman cornerback Jaylin Simpson earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors in his first career start vs. Kentucky, accounting for four tackles, a TFL and a PBU. n Auburn is 82-39-6 all-time in road openers and 378-354-39 all-time in all games played away from Auburn. The Tigers have won 11 of their last 16 road openers, including a 27-21 win over Oregon in Texas last season. n Auburn is 45-36-6 all-time in its SEC road openers and has won 19 of the last 24 SEC road debuts, including a 28-20 victory at Texas A&M last season. IN OCTOBER n Auburn is 314-164-18 (.651) all-time in October. Auburn’s October home record is 172-35-3 (.828). Away from Au- burn, the Tigers are 142-129-15 (.520) in October n Auburn is 17-8 in October under Gus Malzahn. Auburn is 12-3-1 on October 3 all-time, and 4-2-1 against SEC teams on that date. VANDERBILT ...............................................TBA HOME OPENER ON GAMEDAY n Last year, Georgia beat Murray State 63-17 in its home opener. Under Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs are 4-0 in Sanford Stadium openers. Georgia has won eight consecutive home openers. n This season, Georgia opened its year on the road against an SEC opponent for the second year in a row. The Bulldogs topped Arkansas 37-10 last weekend and dropped Vander- bilt 30-6 in Nashville in 2019. n This will mark the first time ESPN College GameDay will be at a Georgia game since last year’s SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. n GameDay also came to Athens for the Dogs’ win over #7 Notre Dame in 2019. This will mark GameDay’s sixth time in Athens. COMPETITION CONTINUES AT QB n Redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis got the start in the season opener and then in the second quarter, junior Stetson Ben- nett came in to help spark the Bulldogs to a 37-10 road win over Arkansas. n Mathis finished 8-for-17 for 55 yards and an interception during his first outing. He enrolled early in January 2019 and competed during spring practice. Mathis was then forced to redshirt the 2019 season after undergoing surgery to remove a brain cyst. n Bennett directed the Bulldog comeback, delivering a career performance completing 20-of-29 for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a two-point conversion during Georgia’s road win. n Bennett played in five games for the Bulldogs last year and was 20-for-27 for 260 yards and two touchdowns. n Georgia also has redshirt sophomore transfer JT Daniels and early enrollee Carson Beck competing for playing time. n While at USC, Daniels started all 11 games as a true fresh- man in 2018 before a knee injury in the 2019 opener short- ened his sophomore season. DEFENSE LEADING THE WAY n The Bulldogs are expected to have one of the nation’s top defenses again in 2020. Georgia opened up with a 37-10 road win over Arkansas, holding the Razorbacks to 280 yards on 67 plays. n In 2019, Georgia led the country in Scoring Defense (12.6 points/game) and Rushing Defense (74.6 yards/game). n The Bulldogs allowed only two rushing touchdowns last season (both by quarterbacks) to lead the nation and set a school record with the lowest total in the SEC since 1970 (LSU). n Eight of Georgia’s top tacklers from 2019 return, includ- ing the team leader in senior Monty Rice (89 tackles), the squad’s sack leader in redshirt sophomore Azeez Ojulari (5.5) and senior Richard LeCounte.
