Confronted with extraordinary obstacles, Auburn student-athletes, coaches and staff have risen to the challenge. Exercising discipline and diligence, we’ve followed the lead of the SEC Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force and Auburn Athletics team physician Dr. Michael Goodlett. Our fall sports teams have sacrificed aspects of the way of life we all took for granted prior to the pandemic. Now, they reap the reward: the opportunity to compete with their teammates, to proudly wear the orange and blue. More than six months have passed since our winter and spring sports were postponed. A half- year without a celebra- tory singing of “War Ea- gle” after a hard-fought victory. Now, we’re back! When you watch the Auburn Tigers play, you’ll notice on our uniforms and/or equipment the Auburn Unity Symbol, black and white hands clasped together in solidarity. The Auburn Unity Symbol represents the oneness we seek to instill in our teams and throughout our community, acknowledging and celebrating our differences while we unite for a greater purpose. While we wish we could pack Jordan-Hare Stadium with 87,451 enthusiastic fans this season, prudence dictates a reduced capacity and strict adherence to the physical distancing, face coverings and personal hygiene measures we’ve all adopted in 2020. For the chance to watch the Auburn Tigers play – whether in person or on television (with the voices of Andy, Stan and Ronnie coming through loud and clear on radio) – it’s a price we will gladly pay. We deeply appreciate the flexibility and understanding of our season ticket holders and fans. Like Coach Malzahn has said many times, we have the best fans in college football. To our students who will comprise the majority of those attending Auburn’s first game, thank you for doing so safely and responsibly to protect yourself, your family and your community. We’re counting on you to amplify your voices to create the home- field advantage the Auburn Tigers have enjoyed year after year each time they run onto Pat Dye Field. Throughout all of the uncertainty we’ve experienced this year, there’s one thing we’ve been able to count on: the unwavering commitment of the Auburn family. Your support makes it possible for Auburn Athletics to carry out our mission of rais- ing the profile of Auburn University through excellence in intercollegiate athletics. The way you believe in Auburn motivates us to educate, support and develop student-ath- letes at every moment, to create Auburn women and men. On to victory, and War Eagle! Allen A WORD FROM ALLEN GREENE, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS A UBURN TRADITIONS 15 AUBURN CREED I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking hum- bly with my God.” And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. -George Petrie (1943) AUBIE Aubie, Auburn’s Tiger mascot, is in his 42nd year as a spirit leader and goodwill ambassador for Auburn University. A popular character among Auburn fans and one of the more animated mascots in the country, Aubie has been on the job since 1979. Aubie’s existence began as a cartoon character that first appeared on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football pro- gram cover on Oct. 3, 1959. Birmingham Post-Herald artist Phil Neel created the cartoon Tiger who continued to adorn Auburn program covers for 18 years. Along with Aubie’s nine national championships, he was the first collegiate mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Aubie received this honor at an induction ceremony in Philadelphia on Aug. 15, 2006. AUBURN EAGLES For more than 100 years, eagles have been associated with Auburn. From a presence on the sidelines to rousing flights over the field, WAR EAGLE is an Auburn icon. The role of Auburn University’s eagles is to promote wildlife conservation as a part of the education initiatives of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the College of Veter- inary Medicine’s Southeastern Raptor Center (SRC). The USFWS permits the SRC to house eagles and use them in hundreds of educational presentations each year, includ- ing home football games. In addition to the eagles, there are numerous other non-releasable raptors used for these educational programs. Aurea came to the SRC in 2016 with a fractured wing that did not heal correctly, making her non-releasable. Aurea’s first stadium flight was on November 17, 2018, prior to the Auburn vs. Liberty game. She was officially named War Ea- gle VIII on November 22, 2019. Currently, the SRC has one other eagle in training- a Bald Eagle named Independence who came to the center as a human imprint in 2018.
