Aurea, a 6-year-old female, is now part the storied tradition of golden eagles at Auburn Tiger foot- ball games, a tradition that dates back to the late 1800s. “Aurea actually made her first stadi- um flight in late 2018 and flew at most of our home games last season,” said Andrew Hopkins, assistant director of raptor training and education, “but she has now been named and honored as our official eagle.” Aurea was brought to the in 2016 after being found near Selma, Alabama, with an injury to her right wing. Auburn veterinarians brought her back to good health, but the aftermath of the injury causes her to have more drag during flights. “Her flight stamina isn’t quite good enough for her to be released into the wild, but it doesn’t affect her flying in the stadium because she’s not chasing a live animal,” Hopkins said. Aurea has a 6.5-foot wingspan and weighs 8 pounds while, in comparison, male Nova has a 6-foot wingspan and weighs 7 pounds. “This size difference is normal because female eagles are normally about 30 percent larger than the males,” Hopkins said. Twenty-one-year-old Nova con- tinues to be named War Eagle VII and appears in educational shows at the raptor center. He has been sidelined from pregame flights since 2017 due to cardiomyopathy, a chronic disease of the heart, which veterinarians are man- aging through medication, said Dr. Seth Oster, faculty avian veterinarian. Nova was hatched in 1999 at the Montgomery Zoo and was non-re- leasable due to human imprinting. He came to Auburn in 2000, made his first pregame flight at the Kentucky game in 2004 and was designated War Eagle VII in 2006. He made 58 pregame flights and has appeared in almost 2,000 ed- ucational programs at the raptor center and at schools and conservation events around the Southeast. “Spirit, our 24-year-old bald eagle, will continue to do pregame flights along with Aurea. We also have a young bald eagle, Indy, that is beginning to fly at games, but Auburn’s War Eagles are always golden eagles.” Auburn’s eagles have inspired fans with graceful flights over Jordan-Hare Stadium since the inaugural untethered free flights in 2000, when golden eagle Tiger reigned as War Eagle VI. The Southeastern Raptor Center’s mission is to rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned raptors and to educate the public about their role and importance and to research raptor-re- lated issues. The center is given permis- sion by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to house, care for, and showcase birds of prey in its educational mission. The drive began at Auburn’s 4-yard line after Smoke Monday caused a fumble that Jamien Sherwood recovered. Auburn quarterback Bo Nix spent time in both end zones on the drive, escaping a safety and rushing 8 yards for a first down on third-and-3 from the Tigers’ 11-yard line. Three Mark-Antony Richards’ runs netted 25 yards to Auburn’s 44. Nix connected with tight end John Samuel Shenker for 26 yards to Alabama’s 8-yard line. After two Richards’ runs advanced the ball to the 1, Nix scored on third-and-goal to cap a 12-play drive, the Tigers’ longest in the series since the 1987 Iron Bowl. Nix completed 23 of 38 passes for 227 yards. Anthony Schwartz led Auburn’s receiving corps with five catches for 60 yards. After Auburn’s defense forced a punt on Alabama’s first possession of the second half, Nix’s 37- yard pass to Shedrick Jackson on third-and-2 was Auburn’s longest gain of the game. Auburn scored first in the second half on Anders Carlson’s 45-yard goal, trimming Alabama’s lead to 21-6 with 10:36 left in the third quarter. Auburn held Alabama to 2 yards rushing on five carries in the first quarter. Alabama’s first drive began at Auburn’s 34-yard line, but the Tigers’ defense forced a punt after a three-and-out. The Tigers responded with a 12-play drive, converting a pair of third downs on Nix completions to Schwartz and J.J. Pegues, to set up Carlson’s 47-yard field goal to make it 14-3. Zakoby McClain led Auburn with nine tackles. Jaren Handy recorded his first career sack. Richards led Auburn with 57 rushing yards on 14 carries. Auburn battled back from an early 7-0 deficit, and Nix’s first score put the Tigers ahead 10-7 late in the first half. The quarterback did his best Houdini impression, escaping two defenders in the backfield and avoiding a sack. He then rolled left, ran toward the end zone and lowered his head at the goal line, willing himself in for six. Texas A&M responded with a touchdown to take a 14-10 lead into halftime, but the Tigers marched down the field on the opening drive of the second half and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run from Nix, his second of the game. For Nix, it was the first time in his career with two rushing touchdowns. He finished with 49 yards on the ground and 144 yards through the air on 15 of 23 passing. Following Nix’s second touchdown run, Auburn continued to have success on the ground with Tank Bigsby ripping off a 42-yard run on the next drive. It was the longest run of Bigsby’s young career, and it led to a 24-yard field goal from Anders Carlson to make it 20-14. Bigsby, Nix and Shaun Shivers spearheaded an Auburn rushing attack that finished with 196 yards on 30 carries, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. Bigsby paced the Tigers with 76 yards on nine carries while Shivers also carried it nine times for 68 yards. The offense hit a snag in the fourth quarter, though, and Texas A&M scored 17 unanswered points in the final 15 minutes to pull away for the victory. Linebacker Zakoby McClain finished with a career-high 17 tackles, including two tackles for loss. McClain now has a team-high 94 tackles through the first nine games.
