Aurea, a 6-year-old female, is now part the storied tradition of golden eagles at Auburn Tiger foot- ball games, a tradition that dates back to the late 1800s. “Aurea actually made her first stadi- um flight in late 2018 and flew at most of our home games last season,” said Andrew Hopkins, assistant director of raptor training and education, “but she has now been named and honored as our official eagle.” Aurea was brought to the in 2016 after being found near Selma, Alabama, with an injury to her right wing. Auburn veterinarians brought her back to good health, but the aftermath of the injury causes her to have more drag during flights. “Her flight stamina isn’t quite good enough for her to be released into the wild, but it doesn’t affect her flying in the stadium because she’s not chasing a live animal,” Hopkins said. Aurea has a 6.5-foot wingspan and weighs 8 pounds while, in comparison, male Nova has a 6-foot wingspan and weighs 7 pounds. “This size difference is normal because female eagles are normally about 30 percent larger than the males,” Hopkins said. Twenty-one-year-old Nova con- tinues to be named War Eagle VII and appears in educational shows at the raptor center. He has been sidelined from pregame flights since 2017 due to cardiomyopathy, a chronic disease of the heart, which veterinarians are man- aging through medication, said Dr. Seth Oster, faculty avian veterinarian. Nova was hatched in 1999 at the Montgomery Zoo and was non-re- leasable due to human imprinting. He came to Auburn in 2000, made his first pregame flight at the Kentucky game in 2004 and was designated War Eagle VII in 2006. He made 58 pregame flights and has appeared in almost 2,000 ed- ucational programs at the raptor center and at schools and conservation events around the Southeast. “Spirit, our 24-year-old bald eagle, will continue to do pregame flights along with Aurea. We also have a young bald eagle, Indy, that is beginning to fly at games, but Auburn’s War Eagles are always golden eagles.” Auburn’s eagles have inspired fans with graceful flights over Jordan-Hare Stadium since the inaugural untethered free flights in 2000, when golden eagle Tiger reigned as War Eagle VI. The Southeastern Raptor Center’s mission is to rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned raptors and to educate the public about their role and importance and to research raptor-re- lated issues. The center is given permis- sion by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to house, care for, and showcase birds of prey in its educational mission. The Auburn junior had finished top 10 in three straight tournaments, and her scoring average of 71.95 was tied for the team lead. She was prepared to take the SEC and NCAA Championships by storm. Instead, the season was canceled and Telfer was sent home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I don’t want to use such a drastic word, but it was a devastating time,” Telfer said. “And just knowing I was going home was more shocking because it became real. I couldn’t even stay here and still practice.” Telfer, a native of South Africa, made her way home in March after colleges across the country turned to virtual learning for the rest of the semester. While some of her teammates were still able to play golf in the U.S., Telfer didn’t have that luxury. The golf courses in her home country were closed for four months during the lockdown. “It was a good three or four months that I couldn’t even hit a ball,” Telfer said. “I put up a net in my backyard and was hitting into that.” Meanwhile, with no patrons on the golf courses, a new group took over – a pride of lions. Telfer knew the lions were in the area, typically keeping to them- selves, but it was still a shock to see them walking across the same greens and fairways she was used to playing from. Not able to play golf, Telfer had to get creative. In addition to the net she put up in her backyard, she also had a putting mat in her room for more practice. “Eventually by the end of it my whole family was going crazy, so we decided to put a huge ladder up and chip through each hole in the ladder and put targets up,” Telfer said. “It ended up being pretty fun.” When the opportunity arose to come back to Auburn and begin practicing again, Telfer jumped at it. However, she was not able to travel with an oversized bag, which meant no golf clubs. Stand- ing at the airport, clubs beside her, she realized she had a problem. She could either wait for another flight or leave the clubs behind. The choice was obvious. “I just brought my putter back,” Telfer said. “I was able to carry it on [the plane], and it was more of a mental thing for me to just have my putter.” Telfer got new clubs in Auburn and returned to the course as soon as she could, but after a lengthy time at home and without golf, she lowered her expec- tations for the U.S. Women’s Amateur in August. After all, it was her first tourna- ment since March. “I was just happy to be out on the course. Very grateful that I could be back playing the sport I love,” she said. But Telfer finished tied for 18th in stroke play to qualify for match play, and after winning her first match, she realized she could do something special. The Auburn junior, a First Team All-SEC se- lection last year, won two more matches the following day and advanced to the quarterfinals where she ultimately bowed out, losing to the eventual champion. Through it all, Telfer harps on trusting the process. Having played the game for so long, she knew her swing would not fail her. She knew it would take a few adjustments here and there to return to the level she was playing last spring. However, the time away gave Telfer a new perspective on the game of golf as a whole. “Don’t take anything for granted,” she said. “We took so many things for granted, and knowing that I wasn’t able to play the sport I loved for three months, it really made me rethink how much I enjoy the sport and how I want to take this further in life.” OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE A UBURNTI G ERS.C O M Kaleigh Telfer: ‘Don’t take anything for granted’ BY JEN DIETRICH98 A UBURN SPOR T S PROPER TIES Auburn Sports Properties is owned and operated by FOX Sports, the official worldwide marketer of Auburn University Athletics.
