OLE MISS REBELS ROSTER A UBURNTI G ERS.C O MA W ORD FROM ALLEN GREENE 13 Dear Auburn Family, It came as no surprise to me when an Auburn University student displayed excellent math skills while being interviewed on TV prior to the season opener. Noting that Jordan-Hare Stadium would be limited to one-fifth of its capacity, this bright scholar quickly computed the decibels needed to compensate. “We’ll need to be five times as loud,” he told a reporter. Sure enough, the next day the 17,490 in attendance for Auburn’s 29-13 victory over Kentucky did their part to create a home-field advantage for the Tigers. Coach Malzahn and our student-athletes noticed, expressing their appreciation in their postgame press conference. “Really want to give a shout-out to our stu- dents,” Coach Malzahn said. “It was extremely loud, specifically in the fourth quarter. They made a big difference.” As will be the case again for the Arkansas game, Auburn students comprised the majority of attendees, physically distancing throughout the stadium. “We have the best fans in the nation if you ask me,” senior Jordyn Peters said. “They’re going to be as loud as possible. They were still yelling and cheering, just like before. I loved it.” “The atmosphere was great,” junior Jamien Sherwood said. “They were loud and we just wanted to put on a good show for everybody who was here.” Much has been written and said about everything the pandemic has canceled or paused. Today I’m focusing on things that have not been placed on hold. The feeling you get when you walk outside on a crisp fall morning and you know the Auburn Tigers will be kicking off in the afternoon. The energy in Jordan-Hare Stadium – no matter how full – when the hype video plays and the Tigers take the field. The jolt we get when Andy Burcham shouts, “Touchdown Auburn!” The exhilaration of seeing Seth Williams outleap a defender (or jump over him!), on a perfectly thrown Bo Nix touchdown pass. The thrill of watching Auburn’s defense force turnovers and keep the opponent out of the end zone. The joy of sitting down with loved ones to watch the Tigers play, burgers on the grill, snacks on the tray, beverages in the cooler. The wonder in a child’s eyes when Aubie is nearby. While we eagerly await the return of tailgating, Tiger Walk, the eagle flight and a sold-out stadium, let’s be mindful of and grateful for all of the virus-proof blessings in our lives. They are numerous indeed. On to vict’ry, and War Eagle! A WORD FROM ALLEN GREENE, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS A UBURN TRADITIONS 15 AUBURN CREED I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking hum- bly with my God.” And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. -George Petrie (1943) AUBIE Aubie, Auburn’s Tiger mascot, is in his 42nd year as a spirit leader and goodwill ambassador for Auburn University. A popular character among Auburn fans and one of the more animated mascots in the country, Aubie has been on the job since 1979. Aubie’s existence began as a cartoon character that first appeared on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football pro- gram cover on Oct. 3, 1959. Birmingham Post-Herald artist Phil Neel created the cartoon Tiger who continued to adorn Auburn program covers for 18 years. Along with Aubie’s nine national championships, he was the first collegiate mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Aubie received this honor at an induction ceremony in Philadelphia on Aug. 15, 2006. AUBURN EAGLES For more than 100 years, eagles have been associated with Auburn. From a presence on the sidelines to rousing flights over the field, WAR EAGLE is an Auburn icon. The role of Auburn University’s eagles is to promote wildlife conservation as a part of the education initiatives of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the College of Veter- inary Medicine’s Southeastern Raptor Center (SRC). The USFWS permits the SRC to house eagles and use them in hundreds of educational presentations each year, includ- ing home football games. In addition to the eagles, there are numerous other non-releasable raptors used for these educational programs. Aurea came to the SRC in 2016 with a fractured wing that did not heal correctly, making her non-releasable. Aurea’s first stadium flight was on November 17, 2018, prior to the Auburn vs. Liberty game. She was officially named War Ea- gle VIII on November 22, 2019. Currently, the SRC has one other eagle in training- a Bald Eagle named Independence who came to the center as a human imprint in 2018.
