Aurea, a 6-year-old female, is now part the storied tradition of golden eagles at Auburn Tiger foot- ball games, a tradition that dates back to the late 1800s. “Aurea actually made her first stadi- um flight in late 2018 and flew at most of our home games last season,” said Andrew Hopkins, assistant director of raptor training and education, “but she has now been named and honored as our official eagle.” Aurea was brought to the in 2016 after being found near Selma, Alabama, with an injury to her right wing. Auburn veterinarians brought her back to good health, but the aftermath of the injury causes her to have more drag during flights. “Her flight stamina isn’t quite good enough for her to be released into the wild, but it doesn’t affect her flying in the stadium because she’s not chasing a live animal,” Hopkins said. Aurea has a 6.5-foot wingspan and weighs 8 pounds while, in comparison, male Nova has a 6-foot wingspan and weighs 7 pounds. “This size difference is normal because female eagles are normally about 30 percent larger than the males,” Hopkins said. Twenty-one-year-old Nova con- tinues to be named War Eagle VII and appears in educational shows at the raptor center. He has been sidelined from pregame flights since 2017 due to cardiomyopathy, a chronic disease of the heart, which veterinarians are man- aging through medication, said Dr. Seth Oster, faculty avian veterinarian. Nova was hatched in 1999 at the Montgomery Zoo and was non-re- leasable due to human imprinting. He came to Auburn in 2000, made his first pregame flight at the Kentucky game in 2004 and was designated War Eagle VII in 2006. He made 58 pregame flights and has appeared in almost 2,000 ed- ucational programs at the raptor center and at schools and conservation events around the Southeast. “Spirit, our 24-year-old bald eagle, will continue to do pregame flights along with Aurea. We also have a young bald eagle, Indy, that is beginning to fly at games, but Auburn’s War Eagles are always golden eagles.” Auburn’s eagles have inspired fans with graceful flights over Jordan-Hare Stadium since the inaugural untethered free flights in 2000, when golden eagle Tiger reigned as War Eagle VI. The Southeastern Raptor Center’s mission is to rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned raptors and to educate the public about their role and importance and to research raptor-re- lated issues. The center is given permis- sion by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to house, care for, and showcase birds of prey in its educational mission. Payton and her two sisters, Sloane and Kendall, grew up in the gym, run- ning around the court playing with Bratz dolls and watching games since their earliest years. “All three of us played other sports when we were little, but then we all fell in love with volleyball,” White said. “Now, I’ve been playing this sport since I was eight. I started playing competitive- ly beginning at 10.” Each sister would prove to be more tal- ented than most girls their age, and even- tually, Sloane and Kendall would both go on to play volleyball at the next level. Following in her older sisters’ foot- steps, White looked to take her skills to the collegiate game. Having never heard of Auburn before, she initially refused to consider continuing her career on The Plains. “My dad actually made me come to Auburn and visit. Once I was here though, I knew that I wanted to come to school here as soon as I stepped foot on campus. I have never wanted to be any- where else throughout my four years.” While at Auburn, White has found her stride and made a name for herself along the way. A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll Honoree and Auburn’s sin- gle-match record holder for digs with 37 in a five-set win over Butler, she has been nothing short of a great represen- tative of the program. Though off the court, White is known as the team’s most notorious shopper and has begun learning the ukulele during her down time. With several high moments during her career, her favorite memory came way back during her freshman cam- paign during a trip to Puerto Rico. “We beat UNC, who we were not supposed to beat,” White said. “We won both matches while we were there, and we weren’t supposed to win any. We were all so happy and that trip was so amazing. I was a freshman, so I was really excited and soaking in every moment and had so much fun the entire time.” Looking ahead to her senior season, White is grateful for the chance to play volleyball and eager to grow under new head coach Brent Crouch. “This new coaching staff will have a huge impact on us this season,” she said. “The improvement I’ve seen over two months has been insane. Because of that, I think we will play better volleyball, have much stronger team commu- nication and a more thorough way of operating. I wish I could have another year under him (Coach Crouch), but I think he’s doing a great job of setting a standard early and creating a winning program.” After the completion of her final sea- son, White wishes to be remembered by her teammates “...as a leader and a friend on and off the court. I want them to see that I always wanted to be better, so they want to do the same. “I want to help set the standard and build a strong team dynamic to start this staff’s first year,” she added. Upon graduation, White will leave Auburn with a degree in management and a double minor in entrepreneurship and marketing. “I want to move to Birmingham, Chi- cago or Nashville and find what I want to do in one of those cities,” White said. “I know that they are full of opportunity, and I would love to experience life there for a few years.” While she has enjoyed her time on the court and in the classroom, White is excited to become an official alumna and carry on the traditions of Auburn no matter where life may take her. “I am definitely going to be one of those parents who brags that they grad- uated from Auburn and takes their kids to the games and watches football with them every Saturday. “No matter where I move to in the United States, I will still remember Au- burn and what it means to be a part of the Auburn Family,” she said. White says that no matter where you may find her, whether it be walking through an airport or shopping for her next outfit, she will always be glad to give her fellow members of the Auburn Fami- ly a loud and enthusiastic, “War Eagle!” OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE A UBURNTI G ERS.C O M A Family Affair BY TUCKER CLEVERDON98 A UBURN SPOR T S PROPER TIES Auburn Sports Properties is owned and operated by FOX Sports, the official worldwide marketer of Auburn University Athletics.
