LSU TIGERS ROSTER A UBURNTI G ERS.C O MA W ORD FROM ALLEN GREENE 13 Dear Auburn Family, It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since the 2010 Auburn Tigers van- quished every opponent they encountered on their way to the national championship. Entering the season ranked No. 22, Auburn steadily climbed up the polls, finally earning the No. 1 ranking after dispatching South Carolina for the second time in the SEC Championship Game before claiming the crown by beating Oregon in Glendale, Arizona. LSU’s visit to Jordan-Hare Stadium this week brings back memories of Auburn’s 2010 matchup with the Bengal Tigers, a battle of unbeatens that Auburn won 24-17. For this year’s LSU game, we are welcoming back several members of the 2010 Auburn Tigers. While we would like to recognize them on the field in our customary manner, COVID-19 protocols prevent that for the time being. For now, a ban- ner we unveiled this week outside the south end of Jordan-Hare Stadium will have to suffice. We can still recall those signature moments from a decade ago. Nick Fairley disrupting game plans and taking quarterbacks to the turf. Michael Dyer staying off the ground on the game-winning drive vs. Oregon. Philip Lutzenkirchen’s end zone dance to complete the Iron Bowl comeback. And of course, Cam Newton’s Heisman moment – the 49-yard touchdown run toward the student section against LSU. Leading up to the game, when a reporter asked LSU’s Les Miles if he would consider using a spy to stop Cam, the ever-quotable coach said he would do so only “if I could have a spy that no one could see, a guy on the field that didn’t count.” I’m not sure even an invisible spy would have stopped Cam on that Saturday. Whatever Coach Miles concocted in practice that week, it didn’t work. Cam ran 28 times for 217 yards. I was working at an SEC West rival that fall – the University of Mississippi. By the time the Tigers came to Oxford, I thought I’d seen Cam do everything that season. Then he caught a touchdown pass from Kodi Burns on Auburn’s first possession. Such was the magic of Cameron Newton. Listening to Coach Malzahn, who was Auburn’s offensive coordinator in 2010, he speaks often about the adversity that team overcame. The double-digit deficits and off-the-field noise. Trailing 24-0 in Bryant-Denny Stadium will test any team. Coach Malzahn says, instead of turning against each other when the road got rough, the opposite occurred for the 2010 Tigers. The adversity brought them together. So it will be, I believe, with the 2020 Tigers. Our team has faced adversity. It’s had an opportunity to make excuses. Instead, they’ve stood by each other, never flinching when hard times arrived. The result led Rod Bramblett to exclaim, after Wes Byrum kicked the game-winner against Oregon, “Here in the desert, Auburn’s journey is complete: 53 years of waiting, of hoping, of dreaming, of coming so close, it’s all over. The Auburn Tigers are on top of the college football world!” Yes, 10 years have passed, but the lessons Auburn learned in 2010 are timeless and timely. When times get tough, the Auburn Tigers stick together. On to vict’ry, and War Eagle! A WORD FROM ALLEN GREENE, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS A UBURN TRADITIONS 15 AUBURN CREED I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking hum- bly with my God.” And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. -George Petrie (1943) AUBIE Aubie, Auburn’s Tiger mascot, is in his 42nd year as a spirit leader and goodwill ambassador for Auburn University. A popular character among Auburn fans and one of the more animated mascots in the country, Aubie has been on the job since 1979. Aubie’s existence began as a cartoon character that first appeared on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football pro- gram cover on Oct. 3, 1959. Birmingham Post-Herald artist Phil Neel created the cartoon Tiger who continued to adorn Auburn program covers for 18 years. Along with Aubie’s nine national championships, he was the first collegiate mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Aubie received this honor at an induction ceremony in Philadelphia on Aug. 15, 2006. AUBURN EAGLES For more than 100 years, eagles have been associated with Auburn. From a presence on the sidelines to rousing flights over the field, WAR EAGLE is an Auburn icon. The role of Auburn University’s eagles is to promote wildlife conservation as a part of the education initiatives of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the College of Veter- inary Medicine’s Southeastern Raptor Center (SRC). The USFWS permits the SRC to house eagles and use them in hundreds of educational presentations each year, includ- ing home football games. In addition to the eagles, there are numerous other non-releasable raptors used for these educational programs. Aurea came to the SRC in 2016 with a fractured wing that did not heal correctly, making her non-releasable. Aurea’s first stadium flight was on November 17, 2018, prior to the Auburn vs. Liberty game. She was officially named War Ea- gle VIII on November 22, 2019. Currently, the SRC has one other eagle in training- a Bald Eagle named Independence who came to the center as a human imprint in 2018.
