He served in the same capacity at the University at Buffalo from No- vember 2015 until his arrival at Auburn. One of the youngest athletics direc- tors in the NCAA Power Five ranks, at 43, Allen is highly regarded by his peers. He is actively engaged in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), in which he was recently nominated to serve as an Executive Committee member, Minority Opportunities Athletics Association (MOAA), and LEAD1. Under Allen’s leadership 30 pro- grams have finished ranked in the top 25 nationally, including 10 programs in the top 10. The Auburn equestrian program has won a pair of national championships since his arrival and the men’s and women’s golf programs each advanced to the national semifinals. The 2018-19 academic year was historic as the men’s basketball pro- gram made its first-ever trip to the Final Four, while the baseball program returned to the College World Series for the first time in 22 years. It marked just the fourth time in Division I history a program sent a team to the Final Four and CWS while winning a football bowl game in the same academic year. Allen’s tenure as director of athletics at the University at Buffalo is noted for success on the field and in the class- room, as well as donor and corporate development efforts that led to an array of facility enhancements. Prior to being named AD at Buffalo, Allen served as the senior associate athletic director for administration and deputy director of athletics at UB. He previously worked in fundraising at Ole Miss for three years and Notre Dame for two years as fund- raiser and five years in compliance. A graduate of Notre Dame with a degree in finance, Allen was a three-year starter for the Fighting Irish baseball team and played three years in the New York Yankees minor league system. He later received his master’s degree from Indiana University’s South Bend campus. Allen and his wife, Christy, have three children, daughters Rian and Seneca, and son Samuel. ALLEN GREENE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS A UBURNTI G ERS.C O M UNIVERSITY NEW S 39 In further affirmation of its land- grant mission to better the community, Auburn University has again achieved an outreach milestone with the recent renewal of its Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Classification through 2026. The designation recognizes the scope, quality, and impact of Auburn’s outreach mission through its institu- tional engagement in the communi- ty. Auburn has held its engagement classification continuously since 2010 and received renewal of the designation following a yearlong application process led by Part of the designation is the premier institutional recognition for a university’s total out- reach and extension body of work in the community. Auburn is recognized in the Carnegie system as a comprehensive, doctoral granting, research institution, having earned the elite “R1” research status this past year. As one of only 119 institutions receiving the Community Engagement Classification this term, Auburn is among a select group of leading universities that now hold this important designation. “We’re honored to hold this national recognition for our outreach and com- munity engagement,” Auburn President Jay Gogue said. “Outreach is a defining aspect of our land-grant heritage, and this classification reflects Auburn’s significant commitment to serving the public in Alabama and beyond.” Universities considered for Carne- gie’s Community Engagement designa- tion must complete a rigorous appli- cation process assessing institutional support for engagement, curricular engagement, and student activities, faculty scholarship, community partner- ships, outreach, and extension work. In order to be selected for the classifica- tion, institutions must demonstrate sus- tained community engagement aligned among mission, culture, leadership, poli- cies, administration, and resources. “This prestigious distinction recog- nizes Auburn’s critical outreach role in engaging the university’s knowl- edge base and expertise directly with communities to solve pressing societal problems and improve the quality of life for the public we serve,” said Royrick- ers Cook, vice president for University Outreach. “Engagement also enriches scholarship, research, and creative ac- tivity, enhances teaching and learning, and addresses important community issues—all elements closely aligned to Auburn’s current strategic plan.” Auburn’s application included information from campus and commu- nity sources representing each school and college, outreach units, Alabama Extension, Student Affairs, and civic partners. The application also noted Auburn’s expansion of its outreach division since the last classification, the growth in faculty engagement and service-learning across the curriculum, and the documented impact of the university’s many engaged partnerships in the community. “This recognition shows that we as the Auburn Family value public service, and it underscores how our engage- ment is making a real difference toward the public good in our state,” Cook said.
