TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS ROSTER A UBURNTI G ERS.C O MA W ORD FROM ALLEN GREENE 13 Dear Auburn Family, Daylight saving time, for many of us, is a blessing and a curse. Who doesn’t love that extra hour of sleep on a Sunday morning in the fall? When the sun sets at 4:30 p.m., however, that’s a different story. On the bright side (pun intended), Auburn’s 6 p.m. CT kickoff for the Tennessee game provides the first chance to showcase the new Musco LED lighting system we installed this summer. Attendees, who again will be primarily stu- dents, can download the Auburn Tigers app and click on the War Eagle Lights tab on the menu to participate in the first ever Jordan-Hare Stadi- um light show at the end of halftime and again between the third and fourth quarters. In addition to the cool light shows, the new fixtures are also energy efficient, last longer than their predecessors, and will put Pat Dye Field and our student-athletes in the best light for the national television audi- ence on ESPN. Under Coach Malzahn’s leadership, our football program continues to diligently follow the protocols established by team physician Dr. Michael Goodlett and the SEC’s Medical Guidance Task Force. That diligence paved the way for Auburn to play six consecutive SEC games without a single positive COVID-19 test. During open dates across the league, the virus reached many SEC student-athletes, disrupting last week’s schedule including Auburn’s game at Mississippi State. Discipline and ongoing sacrifice will guide us to the finish line of the 2020 football season. Speaking of discipline and ongoing sacrifice, this week we’re celebrating Military Appreciation Day, and having seen college football games from coast to coast, no one does it better than Auburn. Flags, flyovers and fanfare. It’s a patriotic salute to the men and women who have worn our nation’s military uniforms and to those ROTC Cadets and Midshipmen pre- paring to serve after graduating from Auburn University. Not even a pandemic will stop us from honoring the heroes who defend our freedom. Throughout the Tennessee game, we’ll honor active duty military members and veterans by sharing their pictures on the video board, and we’ll having a rousing ovation for those in attendance. From the stands, we’ll also introduce our Homecoming court and crown Auburn’s Miss Homecoming. Auburn’s wonderful traditions – the things that make us who we are – look different- ly this season, but they endure nonetheless. Just like the Auburn spirit. On to victory, and War Eagle! A WORD FROM ALLEN GREENE, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS A UBURN TRADITIONS 15 AUBURN CREED I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work. I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully. I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men. I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities. I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all. I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all. I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking hum- bly with my God.” And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it. -George Petrie (1943) AUBIE Aubie, Auburn’s Tiger mascot, is in his 42nd year as a spirit leader and goodwill ambassador for Auburn University. A popular character among Auburn fans and one of the more animated mascots in the country, Aubie has been on the job since 1979. Aubie’s existence began as a cartoon character that first appeared on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football pro- gram cover on Oct. 3, 1959. Birmingham Post-Herald artist Phil Neel created the cartoon Tiger who continued to adorn Auburn program covers for 18 years. Along with Aubie’s nine national championships, he was the first collegiate mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Aubie received this honor at an induction ceremony in Philadelphia on Aug. 15, 2006. AUBURN EAGLES For more than 100 years, eagles have been associated with Auburn. From a presence on the sidelines to rousing flights over the field, WAR EAGLE is an Auburn icon. The role of Auburn University’s eagles is to promote wildlife conservation as a part of the education initiatives of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the College of Veter- inary Medicine’s Southeastern Raptor Center (SRC). The USFWS permits the SRC to house eagles and use them in hundreds of educational presentations each year, includ- ing home football games. In addition to the eagles, there are numerous other non-releasable raptors used for these educational programs. Aurea came to the SRC in 2016 with a fractured wing that did not heal correctly, making her non-releasable. Aurea’s first stadium flight was on November 17, 2018, prior to the Auburn vs. Liberty game. She was officially named War Ea- gle VIII on November 22, 2019. Currently, the SRC has one other eagle in training- a Bald Eagle named Independence who came to the center as a human imprint in 2018.
