< PreviousSENIOR SPO TL IGHT: BILL T A YL OR 51 It is no secret that being a student-athlete takes hard work, dedication and perseverance. A strong mentality is vital to a student-athlete’s success. Senior long snapper Bill Taylor can attest to this, as he places a strong emphasis on having that different mentality. “I always just stayed the course,” Taylor said. “I worked hard on and off the field, but I always knew I could expect consistency from the coaches, professors and administration. Auburn just does things the right way.” Taylor attributes a lot of his success, along with his fellow special teams members, to determination. “In our positions as specialists, the most important trait to have is to be able to stay calm and positive at all times,” Taylor said. “So that you can perform under pressure and not let dire circumstances of a game impact your play. “I would say every other position is about how athletic, fast or strong you are, but we specialists are not nearly as athletic or fast as the other guys. We mainly focus on keeping a strong mental edge.” Being a part of the Auburn football team opened Taylor’s eyes to many things, which played a part in molding him into the strong, well-rounded person he is today. Between the adversity he faced himself to adversity the team faced to- gether, tough off-season workouts, many practices, meetings and team bonding events, he developed his character and embraced the power of a positive mindset. It does not come as much of a surprise that Taylor lives by the quote, “Tough times never last, but tough people do,” This serves as a constant and humble reminder of remaining strong through the hardships he has faced during his time on the Plains. After suffering an injury at LSU during his junior season, Taylor missed games against Ole miss, Georgia, Samford, Alabama and Minnesota. This is where he applied his favorite advice, knowing confidently that this tough time would not last. Taylor remained resilient and returned for his senior season in 2020 and has had much success as the starting long snap- per. A final season as an Auburn Tiger to be proud of. “Just being a specialist [is what makes my position unique],” Taylor said. “The mental aspect of it is huge and you just have to be able to thrive when you are put in serious high-pressure situations, and you must understand that you may only have one chance to do your job perfect while the world is watching the game.” His hard work and determination has shined in more ways than one. Between three consecutive seasons as Auburn’s starting long snapper, changing his major three times and continuously earning a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Taylor has continued to exemplify a high level of success. All the hard work will be rewarded as he prepares to gradu- ate from the College of Agriculture. Taylor plans on attending graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in agricultural leadership. His plans involve eventually moving to Wash- ington, D.C. as an agricultural lobbyist to serve as a voice for farmers. “I really had an epiphany of what I wanted to do with my career while I was taking a food science class with Dr. Leonard Bell,” Taylor said. “This class really opened my eyes to all of the misconceptions people have about agriculture and our food system.” As he reflects on his time at Auburn, Taylor says the oppor- tunity to play for Auburn and have the true student-athlete experience has been one of his biggest accomplishments so far. “[If my younger self got a glimpse of who I am today] I think he would be proud,” Taylor said. “I have worked hard and per- severed through challenging times. “To the Auburn Family I just want to say thank you.
