The University of Connecticut, a member of the conference from 1979 to 2013, was officially readmitted on July 1, 2020. • In the classrooms, 62 BIG EAST athletic programs were recognized in 2019-20 by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic achievement in the previous academic year. • In the summer of 2020, the conference launched “BE the Change,” a conference-wide advocacy platform that will enable BIG EAST stakeholders to engage on a range of contemporary racial and social justice issues. • BIG EAST institutions are located in eight of the nation’s 36 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Hartford/New Haven, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. • In the 41 years since the original league opened its doors, BIG EAST teams have won 42 national championships in eight different sports with 145 student-athletes winning individual national titles in the league’s history.50 2020-21 GEORGETOWN MEN’S BASKETBALL GAMEDAY PROGRAM DiRECTOR OF ATHLETiCS • Came to Georgetown University in April of 2010 as the 17th Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics • Oversees one of the largest broad-based intercollegiate athletics programs in the nation with 29 varsity programs and 700 student- athletes, 12 percent of the undergraduate population at Georgetown • Has been a part of 32 conference tournament and regular season championships on the Hilltop. This also includes five national coach of the year honors and seven team national championships (2019 men’s soccer, 2011 women’s cross country, 2016 men’s lightweight rowing, four ICSA national sailing titles) • Led the Hoyas during the 2013 BIG EAST transition and instituted a 10-year multimedia rights deal with FOX Sports in 2015. Opened the Thompson Center in 2016 and Cooper Field in 2020. • Established the Cooper Athletics Leadership Program as well as bringing on the department’s first full-time counselor, dietician and diversity, equity & inclusion position exclusively for student-athletes as Georgetown strives to support the whole person • 2018-19 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) President • Played basketball at Cleveland State and later served as the athletics director from 2002-2010.2020-21 GEORGETOWN MEN’S BASKETBALL GAMEDAY PROGRAM 51 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHiPS An endowment gift is one of the most impactful contributions a donor can make to Georgetown Athletics.
