KAHLIL WHITNEY Follow KAHLIL on Social Media n @KahlilWhitney on Twitter n @kahlilwhitney on Instagram #2 ChicagoBy Connor Link UK Athletics Communications and Public Relations Despite an excess of injuries that led to 15 of its top 20 leaders in minutes being underclassmen, the Kentucky men’s soccer team completed its 2019 campaign with a record of 13-5-3 (4-2-1 Conference USA), including a home victory in the first round of the NCAA Championship. The Wildcats accumulated at least 13 wins for the seventh time in school histo- ry. The total is the second-highest of head coach Johan Cedergren’s eight-year tenure, following a school record 19 wins in 2018. Kentucky qualified for the NCAA Cham- pionship for the 10th time in program histo- ry and the sixth time under Cedergren. The Cats’ season ended with a 3-0 loss at No. 5 seed Indiana in the tournament’s second round, following a scoreless draw between the teams in Bloomington, Indiana, on Oct. 9. After a season in which seven players earned All-C-USA accolades, including the league’s top individual honor, Kentucky fur- ther added to its trophy case with four Unit- ed Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region awards last Monday. Aimé Mabika and Kalil ElMedkhar were each voted to the All-Southeast Region first team. Enrique Facusse landed on the second team, while Marcel Meinzer was named third-team All-Southeast Region. Mabika was named the C-USA’s Player of the Year and Co-Defensive MVP, as well as first-team All-Conference on Nov. 12. The 6-foot-6 Lexington native became becomes the first player from the Commonwealth of Kentucky to receive the league’s top award, as well as UK’s second consecutive C-USA Player of the Year recipient and third overall winner in program history, joining former UK forward JJ Williams (2018) and goal- keeper Callum Irving (2014, 2015). Since the award was founded in 2009, Kentucky has garnered the title more than any other program. Mabika anchored a 2019 UK de- fense that led the conference in shutouts with nine. ElMedkhar led the Cats with seven as- sists and 22 shots on goal, tying sophomore forward Daniel Evans for the team lead in points (19) and total shots (42) despite playing one fewer match due to injury. The junior midfielder from Middletown, Dela- ware, scored a goal in four straight matches from Sept. 15-28 before being named first- team All-Conference. Facusse’s eight solo shutout efforts ranked 15th in the nation, while his save percentage of .878 placed 28th. Meinzer tied Evans for second on the team with five assists, starting all 21 matches and leading all primarily of- fensive players in minutes with 1,809. Both players were voted to the All-C-USA second team at season’s end. Mabika, ElMedkhar and Facusse were each named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region team in 2018. Mabika (third team) and Facusse (second team) went on to earn All-America distinction. Evans joined Facusse and Meinzer on the 2019 All-C-USA second team, while Eythor Bjorgolfsson and John Michael Bandy were named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
