KAHLIL WHITNEY Follow KAHLIL on Social Media n @KahlilWhitney on Twitter n @kahlilwhitney on Instagram #2 ChicagoBy Tommy Scott UK Athletics Communications and Public Relations The Kentucky’s women’s soccer program made strong improvements in the 2019 season with 15 new student-athletes on the roster. Those 15 were comprised of 14 fresh- men and one JUCO transfer in midfielder Tatiana Hagan. At the end of the 2018 season, head coach Ian Carry and his staff knew that to be successful on and off of the field, they would need to bring in the right players to fit the culture that they were looking to create. Carry and his staff traveled around the world looking for the right players to take the UK program to the next level. That search created a roster of 28 stu- dent-athletes from seven countries and 12 states, with the majority of the team being freshmen or sophomores. The 2019 team only had two seniors in Gina Crosetti and Foster Ignoffo, and the Wildcats expect to only lose those two graduates for the 2020 season. The team, which typically started 7-8 freshmen a game and regularly played 9-10 freshmen, got off to an unexpected start in 2019, firing on all cylinders immediately as Kentucky rattled off seven-straight games unbeaten. The Wildcats tied their first two games and then went on a five-game win- streak. During that stretch, UK had five shut- outs in seven games, outscoring opponents 16-5. Following that stretch, Kentucky ran into a string of tough losses thanks to an SEC schedule which featured four top-25 teams. The Wildcats lost seven one-goal games, with three of those coming in over- time. They went 0-3-3 in overtime games in 2019, with the young team unable to find a winner in all six matches. UK allowed more than two goals in only four of its 19 games this season, something that happened nine times with the 2018 team. The six wins for Kentucky was a one- win improvement on 2018 and its 27 goals scored was an eight-goal improvement. The Wildcats conceded 31 goals this season, while they conceded 48 goals in the 2018 season. Freshmen forwards Hannah Richard- son and Jordyn Rhodes led the way for UK, combining for 16 goals and two assists this season, with both players registering eight goals and one assist each. Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper Steph Stull played every second of the season in goal and freshmen center backs Valdis Björg Sigurbjörnsdòttir and Rebekka Danielsen started every game this season in defense. With a strong nucleus of starters and role players returning, combined with another strong freshman class for 2020, Kentucky looks to continue to make great strides under the direction of Ian Carry and his staff.
