The Wildcats were undefeat- ed, ranked No. 1 nationally for a majority of the season, had set multiple school-record scores, claimed the Great America Rifle Con- ference regular season and tournament cham- pionships, had two athletes headed to the Olympics to represent TEAM USA and were a day away from hosting the NCAA Rifle Cham- pionships for the first time ever as the heavy favorite. However, in a matter of minutes all of those accolades and honors, which were building up to the ultimate prize of winning the NCAA Championship at home, came to a screech- ing halt as the NCAA canceled all on-going or scheduled championship events due to the COVID-19 public health crisis. “I was so proud of our kids, of the work they did all year,” UK head coach Harry Mul- lins told the Lexington Herald-Leader back in March. “For them not to have the opportunity to finish it off, I don’t want to say it broke my heart, but it was definitely disappointing.” Disappointment for sure, but the Wildcats, who return nearly the exact same team for 2020-21, seem to have turned that into mo- tivation. Last weekend, in just their fourth match of the season the Wildcats eclipsed two more school records – setting a new overall aggre- gate mark and a new smallbore team score. The performance put them right back where they are comfortable – on top of the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Top 20 rankings. "It is a great honor to have this ranking during the season," Mullins said. "I am excit- ed to see the team get rewarded after a good weekend. However, we have to stay focused on our plan regardless of where that puts us in the rankings." The CRCA Top 20 is built in the early stag- es of the season based on each team's top per- formance each week with the Wildcats' 4735 last week being the top in the nation. The high score is also the best in the nation so far this season. The 2358 smallbore team score is the second highest in the nation this season be- hind Ole Miss earning a 2361 vs. Murray State on Oct. 11. The Wildcats have earned the two highest air rifle team scores in the nation this season with a 2369 vs. NC State on Oct. 31 and the 2377 last weekend. Individually, the Wildcats have been paced by junior Will Shaner and sophomore Mary Tucker, who have each put together strong starts to the season. In smallbore, there have been seven individual scores of 590 or better this season nationally with Shaner and Tucker each earning two of those high marks. Sha- ner posted a career-best 595 in smallbore last weekend at Murray, which is the highest smallbore score in the nation this season. The two stars have been just as impressive in air ri- fle, as Tucker owns the only two 599 scores in the nation this season while Shaner is one of three athletes nationally to score 598 or better. Overall, the entire UK roster has performed well in the two in-person matches this season. Junior Richard Clark is averaging 582.5 in smallbore and 585 in air rifle, while fellow ju- nior Mitchell Nelson has a season average of 578 in smallbore and 583 in air rifle. Sopho- more Emmie Sellers and Jaden Thompson are having strong seasons with Sellers av- eraging 573 in smallbore and 587 in air rifle while Thompson has the third highest air rifle average on the team at 589 with a 570.5 in smallbore. Senior Hailee Sigmon has the fourth highest smallbore average on the team at 581.5 along with a 575 in air rifle. Sophomore Mason Hamilton is averaging a 573.5 in smallbore and 578 in air rifle, while senior Mason Joachim is earning a 572 average in smallbore and 579 in air rifle. The UK rifle team has two more match- es this fall before breaking and coming back in early 2021 for the remainder of the season. Kentucky will conclude the fall by hosting the Kentucky Long Rifle Match with Morehead State and Murray State this weekend in Lexington before traveling to Navy on Nov. 21 to complete the fall schedule. UK also instilled programs to help prepare players for changes in life and to better connect with every player while at the same time bringing former players back who can offer career advice.COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Many Kentucky players choose to take part in serving the community in a variety of projects, including mentoring, hospital visits, speaking engagements and food drives. In 2019, along with other UK engineering students and a team of Toyota Manufacturing engineers, senior offensive guard Luke Fortner worked for months to help design, test and manufacture a specially-built push cart vehicle through a project called “Lift Them Up.” The push cart vehicle provides a Kentucky Children’s Hospital patient the chance to both accompany the Wildcats on the Cat Walk and attend a game at Kroger Field. PERFORMANCE Every college football program puts a premium on developing student-athletes, but the Performance program is unique to Kentucky.
