< PreviousQUALITY CONTROL/GRADUATE ASSISTANTS Eric McDaniel Defense Quality Control Eric McDaniel was hired as part of the Univer- sity of Louisville football staff in January of 2019. McDaniel made the move to Louisville after pre- viously working for Scott Satterfield at Appalachian State. McDaniel served as a defensive quality control coach for two years working specifically with the defensive line. Prior to his time at Appalachian State, McDaniel worked a pair of seasons as a graduate assistant at Muskingum. McDaniel played collegiately at Purdue from 2009-13, appearing in 15 games. McDaniel graduated from Purdue in 2014 with a bachelor’s de- gree in health and kinesiology, and a master’s in education from Muskingum in 2016. Karl Maslowski Senior Special Teams Quality Control Karl Maslowski is in his second season as a qual- ity control coach at Louisville. Maslowski owns nine years of experience as a special teams coordinator at the FBS and Division II levels. As a coordinator, his punt units finished in the top 30 nation- ally six times and his punt return defense ranked there four times in nine seasons. A former special teams coordinator with over nine years of experi- ence, Maslowski came to Louisville from Northern Michigan, where he spent six seasons from 2013-18. He worked as the running backs and tight ends coach, while also directing the special teams units in 2017-18. He started his career at NMU in 2013, coaching the line- backers and guiding the special teams. As the running backs coach, Maslowski played an integral role in his rushers setting three school rushing records and developing the school’s first Harlon Hill nominee. Prior to his time at Northern Michigan, he worked three seasons at his alma mater Western Kentucky, coaching the linebackers in 2010- 11 and coordinating the special teams in 2012. His 2011 special teams units finished in the top 25 nationally in four different statisti- cal categories. As a recruiter, Maslowski played a role in securing the No. 1 re- cruiting classes in the Sun Belt in back-to-back seasons. Maslowski played collegiately at Western Kentucky, where he was an All-American linebacker from 1999-2003 and earned a bachelor’s de- gree in public health education in 2004. He helped guide the Hilltoppers to a 1-AA national title in 2002 and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and academic all-conference during the 2003 campaign. Maslowski is married to the former Brittney Long and the couple has three children: Lila, Stella and Donovan. Pete Thomas Offense Quality Control Pete Thomas came to the University of Louisville in January of 2019. Thomas spent two seasons working under Scott Satterfield at Appalachian State, as an offensive graduate assistant in 2017 and offensive quality control coach in 2018. He also served as the interim quarterbacks coach for the 2018 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, which the Mountaineers won 45-13 over Middle Tennessee. Thomas spent a spring at Texas A&M Kingsville in addition to work at his alma mater Valhalla High School in El Cajon, Calif. A quarterback during his playing career, Thomas started for three different FBS programs. His collegiate career began at Colorado State, where he started 21 games over the 2010-11 seasons. Thomas transferred to North Carolina State and redshirted the 2012 season before making six starts in 2013. He then closed out his collegiate career in 2014 at Louisiana Monroe. For his career, Thomas threw for more than 9,000 yards and 36 touchdowns, completing 61.7 percent of his passes. Thomas played one season for the Los Angeles Kiss of the Arena Football League, throwing for over 2,000 yards and 43 touchdowns. Thomas graduated from North Carolina State in 2014 with his bachelor’s degree in communications. Phillip Hicks Defense Quality Control Phillip Hicks joined the University of Louisville football program in 2019. Hicks is in his third season working for head coach Scott Satterfield after serving as a defensive graduate assistant coach at Appalachian State in 2018. At Appala- chian State, Hicks assisted with the outside linebackers and coached the scout team quarterbacks in addition to practice planning and breaking down film. Prior to returning to Boone, N.C., Hicks spent three seasons in the high school ranks, working at Wilkes Central (N.C.) in 2015 and Carolina Forest (S.C.) in 2016 and 2017. At both stops, Hicks worked with the defensive backs. Hicks’ coaching career began as an undergraduate student un- der Satterfield at Appalachian State in 2013. Hicks worked for the Mountaineers for the 2013 and 2014 seasons before graduating with his bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education in May of 2015. Zeb Speir OffenseQuality Control Zeb Speir became a member of the University of Louisville football staff in 2019. Speir comes to Louisville after wrapping up his collegiate career at Appalachian State in 2018. The Sylva, N.C. native spent four seasons as a quarterback on Scott Sat- terfield’s team, appearing in five games over his final two years. Speir was a member of the Appalachian State football team that captured three consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships and four straight bowl victories. As a player, Speir was a member of the Head Coach’s Leadership Council and selected to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List. Mullett oversees all of the digital technology in the football program as well as, coordinates all of the video filming at Louisville ‘s practices and games. He also, supervises and coordinates the video staff. In addition, he works with external companies on the mainte- nances of all of Louisville’s technology, video systems and platforms in the football center. Before coming to Louisville, Mullett served as the Associate Di- rector of Football Operations at the University of Tennessee. Over- seeing and assisting with the day to day operations of the program. Prior to his stop a Tennessee Mullett spent two years at Marshall University as the Director of Video Services. Overseeing the athletic departments video operations as well as coordinating the technol- ogy and filming needs for the football program. Mullett spent two seasons at his almater Eastern Michigan Uni- versity, as the Football Video Coordinator. He also spent time as a defensive graduate assistant before taking over the video duties. Mullett graduated from EMU in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management/marketing. He is married to his wife Abbie Mullett. Matt Summers Senior Director of Sports Medicine/ Head Football Athletic Trainer Matt Summers enters his third year as the senior director of sports medicine and head football ath- letic trainer at the University of Louisville. Summers rejoined the Cardinal football program last year after be- ginning his career at Louisville from 2003-2005. Summers started as a graduate assistant and was promoted to an assistant athletic trainer in 2005. With the Cardinals, he assisted the head athletic trainer with the prevention, assessment and care of athletic injuries related to foot- ball, designed and implemented rehabilitation protocols, and recruit- ment and supervision of graduate assistants and students. After his three years with the Cardinals, Summers took a posi- tion in the National Football League with the San Diego Chargers for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. With the Chargers, Summers helped conduct and monitor the team’s rehabilitation program, monitored the field and communicated with the coaching staff during practices, managed inventory and budgeting, and was responsible for inter- viewing and hiring summer students and seasonal interns. Following the 2007 season, Summers served as a member of the 2008 AFC Pro Bowl Athletic Training staff. Summers earned his bachelor’s degree in education from the Uni- versity of Kentucky in 2002, returned to his alma mater in 2008-09 as senior athletic trainer. He served as the director of rehabilitation, generated daily injury reports for coaches, supervised graduate assis- tants and students, was responsible for the budget and supplies, and maintained injury records. After working at UK for one season, Summers joined the Arkansas athletic training staff in 2009 as the head athletic trainer for football before being promoted to director of athletic training for the Razor- backs’ athletic department in 2013. At Arkansas, Summers oversaw the athletic training department, leading a staff of full-time employees, graduate assistants and student athletic trainers. He was in charge of developing and implementing health care policies and procedures for student-athletes, coordinat- ing contractual agreements with health care providers that comprise the sports medicine team and managed the athletic training budget. Along with the collaboration of team physicians, Summers was re- sponsible for directly overseeing the health care of football student athletes. He helped develop and implement strategies and protocols to prevent, treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries and illnesses. Summers, who holds a master’s degree in health and wellness from Louisville, is married to the former Kim Ahr.
